I'm a little confused as to what i have. When i bought my 1996 F-250 PSD, the guy happened to mention that the truck was the Heavy Duty. I thought nothing of it. When i was away on vacation i lost a u joint and had to go to NAPA to buy a new one and what they gave me didn't fit. I brought it back with the old cap to match up and they said that size was from a F-350. I said OK, i just know it's the one that's going to fit. Then i'm under the front today and stamped on the front springs are 350. Do i have a 250 that has 350 suspension and drivetrain? Can anyone shed some light on this. Thanks!
Is your front axle a solid axle beam like the rear axle or does each half of the axle pivot in the middle (IFS). The f-250 come with a Twin traction beam (TTB) dana 50 front axle. it is two halves that have pivots points in the middle. The F-350 has a solid staright axle up front (dana 60). The 60 is a much better axle and it is a very common upgrade for the F-250.
Tim,
It is a solid front axle. It is a 4X4 so there are u joints and i guess half shafts (?). What does this mean i have? It is entirely possible the prior owner upgraded things...he was a ford certified diesel mechanic.
I just want to confirm that i'm describing what i have correctly and am interpreting what you're saying right. I have a solid beam that goes knuckle to knuckle (tire to tire), definately not modern suv independant front suspension. From the front ring there are shafts with u joints that do the actual turning of the tires, like axles that aren't housed in a rear end. When you say does it look like the rear end, i would say no, because these "half shafts" aren't contained in the rear end from center to tire. Would this all still support a dana 60?
Secondly, i'm under the impression that i have a a 350 rear suspension also.
You guys are amazing with all the knowledge you have!
Ok yes the Dana 60 using u-joint and all that at the knuckle as does the Dana 50 TTB. By comparing to the rear axle I was just talking about the non independant part. The Dana 50 isn't quite like modern IFS set ups either but from the sounds of it you have the Dana 60. The 60 will have round axle tubes. the 50 has stamped steel rectangular housings and two seperate axle tubes that are mounted to pivots. Check out the pictures in the post above and that should help you also.
The only difference in the rear suspension between the 250 and 350 is the lift block that installed. The previous owner may have also added the overload springs and frame brackets and that would be good too.
I'm thinking i have a Dana 50 I crawled under there and it's a rectangular housing with the shafts running through it. I did see on the front springs, "EW 350 95", but i guess since you said the springs are the same as the 350 that could make sense. If the 250 and 350 have the same springs, why the different ratings (3/4 ton and 1 ton)?
Thanks for putting up with all the rookie questions!
I just looked under my f350 2wd I just bought 2 weeks ago. I think I have the ttb dana 50 front end?????????? It definetely is an independent style of front end,, not like the rear end???????????? I thought by the post all f350s should have the dana 60??? Have I missed something?
well it does sound like you have a Dana 50. The front springs are different between the 250 and 350 but the rear springs are the same. One of the easiest way to tell the difference is look at the differential cover. The dana 50 will not have a cover. its gear cover is part of the axle housing. the Dana 60 will have a cover that is similiar to the rear axle.
Ok here is a good pics of the TTB. The one pictured is actually a Dana 44 from a F-150 or bronco but they look very much the same except the 250 uses leaf springs and not coil springs http://rides.webshots.com/photo/1275...65826033tYySkr

If your truck is a 2wd you don't have either Dana axles. Its just fords TTB two wheel drive axle. We are talking 4WD here. All 2wd trucks have the ttb type axle up front.
