According to Bubba's 'M' Block Website the 351M had 8.6:1 Compression Ratio. You don't want a long duration cam in that motor without incresing the CR. or it will be a dog at low RPM.
The first thing you want to do is to replace the timing Set and installing it 'Straight up'.
The cam choice will depend on where you want the power. For good low end power use a Comp Cams 255DEH. For more power at highway speed you could use a Comp cams 265DEH.
Straight up refers to the cam's timing in relation to the crank. Stock 351m's were retarded 4 degrees for smog. They run much better at 0 degrees which is called straight up timing due to it's physical position indicated when installed. Or something like that.
I'd go with something like a comp cams 255deh. Increases exhaust duration but keeps operating compression in the correct range.
can i set the stock cam back to 0 or do i have to get a new cam
cause im kind of on a budget so i could afford the cam its just the springs retaines and my timing set that cost me
I just fired up my fresh rebuilt 400 with a 255 deh comp cam and double roller chain that I got from TMI. I couldn't be much happier with the combo. Price was good too!
