[updated:LAST EDITED ON 01-Sep-02 AT 10:36 AM (EST)]What does that mean? While driving down the road, the off illuminated even though I will in overdrive (it was not turned off) and it started flashing. The tranny seemed to shift a little harder too. Engine is 5.4, 1998, E40D 4x4.
The truck has 51,000 miles and had its first tranny service at 47,000 miles. Previously, it has worked fine, though for the last few weeks, it seems like it occassionally shifts a bit harder than it should.
The flashing OD light is a check transmission light. The PCM has picked up a trans related error and set a code. Take it to a dealer. Don't take it to Joe Blow transmissions down the street. Or you will pay Joe Blow to mess it up further then pay the dealer to fix it. And E4ODs ain't cheap.
Yup, you have a trans problem, the computer cautght it and the blinking light is the indicator. You can read that in your user's manual. It is quite confusing at first. I had the same happening. I replaced a solenoid and a valve in the valvebody. Fixed it. The trans actually hesitated from 1st to 2nd when cold.
Thanks for the tip. I will have it looked at. Seems to be working fine at the moment, perfectly fine. Maybe the computer adjusted for the problem?? Still, given the cost of rebuilding, i will get it looked at.
The only concerning thing is, I did not have any trouble until I changed the fluid 3000 miles ago at 48,000. I did not take it to Ford but rather a well established local shop. I am wondering if he could have put the wrong fluid in. Can anyone tell me exactly what Type of fluid is called for in the E4OD? I am sure he did it right, but i will check. The dipstick says Mercon or something like that.
You need a special fluid from Motocraft. I have two quarts left from back when I fixed my transmission, I can look up the specs for you if you remind me privately at geo.aigel@netzero.net. While others might work, I strongly suggest you get the fluid that the dealer puts in there.
I don't know, but the trans really is a service free unit? Why did you change the fluid at all? It takes more than 10 quarts to fill the sucker if you drain the converter. The sheer amount of fluid and the special formulation helps to keep things service free.
Anyway, definitely get the truck to the shop. The computer does not correct problems in the transmission. The transmission is an independent unit with electronic actuators and hydraulics. If something goes wrong in there, there isn't anything the computer can do. My problems were intermittent also, however, the comptuter tripped and the problems were real.
I am going to start a new thread with my new info, but thought i would put a brief comment in here. I got the code on the tranny. It was 1728 and means "transmission slippage" occured. It mentions sensors, PCM, and a few other things as possible problems. The dealer said it could also have been a one time slip that the computer picked up and it might not repeat.
I contacted my non dealer service mechanic too. He said he put Type F fluid when he serviced it. He said it is the best. Not sure but i know the book calls for Mercon III.
The Hayes manual I have specifies MERCON V for 4 speed auto trans. If your Ford manual says something different, I would go with that instead.
Curious what the previous post said...asking why you replaced the trans fluid. Doesn't the Ford Service Guide that came with the truck state that the transmission fluid should be changed every 36 months, or 30,000 miles?
E4ODs use Dexron/Mercon III and 4R70Ws use Mercon V. As for changing the fluid, transmissions generate a lot of heat and that heat breaks down he additives in the fluid. You should change the fluid every 30K. A complete flush works the best as it changes all the fluid. Just dropping the pan and changing the filter changes about 6 qts. If you do any towing, you should install a external cooler b/c the radiator cooler is barely enough for regular use.
Changed my fluid the first time at 130k miles. Fluid and bottom of pan looked like new. Had a problem with a solenoid, that is why we went into the trans. Truck was owned by Ford sales guy's dad. My friend who is a mechanic at the same dealership claims that my transmission is maintenance free! If he is wrong, why would the sales guys dad have gone without a trans fluid change that long.
I know I was the first in the trans because the dip stick plug was still in the pan.
We put close to 14 quarts of fluid back in it, if I remember right. We drained the converter.
Opposite to an engine, where you introduce foreign substances into the carnk case, a transmission is sealed off completely. There are many new cars now that have completely maintenance free transmissions.
actually, the owners manual says E4OD has "no scheduled maintenance". I called dealer and they said, yes, you need to change fluid. When i asked about the manual, he was obviously unfamiliar with its recommendations.
