how many miles generally can be expected out of an ole powerstroke of these years, reson i ask is i am thinkin about buyin a 96 that has around 176k on it, the truck looks astounding but i think thats a few miles, just wantin yall's opinion
Thats a few miles but as long as the engine was maintained it is far from too many miles. check the turbo for sand blasting and ask for maintence records if they have them. But it should be good.

sand blasting is where you take the intake hose off the turbo inlet and look for a sandblasted look on the fins of the turbo wheel. also look for chips taken out of the fins and check to see if the wheel moves to much when you try to move it side to side, up and down, and in and out. it should move a little from what i've been told, but not much. my truck has 245,000 and runs great. also if the truck is a manual tranny ask if the flywheel was upgraded to a single mass flywheel. if not you will need to get one. good luck!!!!!!!!!
Sandblasting: the stock intake is junk and can flow more dirt than it can air. So you need to check the turbo wheel for signs of that junk coming in. the Wheel should have a staright sharp edge with sharps corners. any chips, dings, round edges and feathered look to the blades is not a good sign.

This diesel engine is new to me so how do you check that? What do you need to take apart? Any pics would be great.
and here is another that shows the intake tubing that will need to be removed. above the blue boots above the part labeled "fuel pressure regulator" there is a orange boot right in the upper right corner. your will be black but that black peice going right into the turbo needs to be removed. it has a hose clamp on each end.

tndiesel: mine is orange right now that goes into the turbo. The pic that Tim showed is of modified intake boot and his has an intercooler as well. (ENVIOUS AM I). But I hope you get the idea. Just take off the boot that feeds the turbo no matter what color it is and inspect the turbo.
