I have a '94 f150 with an I-6. Next weekend i am going to change the fuel filter, i was wondering how exactly i get the fuel lines off the filter? My service manuel shows 3 possible connection types but doesnt say which it is. Also has anyone run into some problem with getting the filter off the truck? i just say this due to the location below a brake line and next to the front gas tank.
The filter shouldn't be that hard to get off. As for the different styles of filters, Ford primarily uses the following. The first has plastic tabs that are in the ends of the fuel lines that attach to the filter. If you carfully pry up on the tabs you can lift them up and then pull the lines off. The second design has a fitting that is round (usually metal) that fits over the lip of the end of the filter. This has a spring-lock inside and you'll need a special tool to remove it (normally $10 at an autoparts store and called a Fuel Line Disconnect.) To remove those just push the line inwards towards the filter and then use the tool to release the springs then pull off.
You will need the tool every truck I worked on after 92 (high volume system ) Has had them . If your filter has been changed in last 5 yrs get the plastic set . They work 99% time just spray with penetrating fluid couple time. I live in rust zone so I also have the Metal multi sizes (pier like) One . If I get a problem the small handle helps work loose . Good luck
Just changed the filter on my 97 250 and i needed the little scissor tool that goes in the end of the line. Thanks to those in this post, I only wrestled with it for 20 minutes before finding this post and going to the auto parts store.
WE ran mine up on a lift, thankfully, I can't imagine doing it on the ground. We wound up breaking the posts off teh old filter before we could get them to release. New filter went on nice, works great. I suppose I'll have to change it again in 12 years.
I just changed the one on my new 94 truck took 3hrs and I tossed the plasitc set away . Had to just the plier type and still took forever to get rear one loose.
yep, it dint take too long. i put the plastic tool in there and tried to pull the line off the filter but couldnt get it. eventually my dad pulled on it and got it off. it wasnt rusted since it had just been changed about three years ago. however after it was all done, we figured out that you have to push the line in after the plastic tool was on it instead of just pulling on it while holding the plastic thing on. over all it took us little less than an hour.
