I have a Sony amp with 2 100W channels. I have one channel wired to a 4ohm 8" (300W max power) subwoofer. I can see the speaker flexing to the music, but I would like more power. The specs say it can be wired as a monaural amp to produce 250W, but gives no wiring instructions (a call to Sony turned out to be a waste of time). Can anyone tell me how to do this?
To achieve monaural, you combine the left and right channels so that no stereo signal is produced; it becomes one signal containing the data from both channels output as a single signal. This is a most common setup for car subwoofers. The wire this up, you simply attach the + seaker wire from the left connection to the back of the amp at the left speaker + and the - speaker connection to the back of the amp at the right speaker - terminal. http://www.crutchfield.com/learningcenter/car/subwoofers_wiring.html?suboptions=2-Channel_1-4ohm-SVC&type=2-Channel#4193723196700778820
This should also have the same effect a bridging the two channels providing more power. The added power comes from reducing the resistance from 4 ohms to 2 ohms. Check your Sony owners manual to be sure but I think it is compatible in this manner.
Shamus - Thanks for your help. With the door speakers replaced with better units, the stock speakers in place in back and the amped 8" subwoofer box in the middle back, it sounds pretty good.
