Question Turbo whistle

Does anybody know that sound of an aftermarket exhaust on the 6's that sounds like a jet plane? From what I have read, only the 03's make this noise? I have a Jan 04 f-250 and I wanted this noise noise also. I already put the cat and mufler delete pipes on and you can her the turbo OK, but I want the jet plane! Does anybody have an 04 with this awsome turbo whistle? What did you have to do? Thanks.

The 03's make the most whistle because they have a silencer ring on the turbo that can be removed. The 04's and up do not have the removable ring. If you've already done the cat and muffler deletes, the only other thing that might help you get a little more whistle is to go to a 3.5" downpipe and 4" exhaust the rest of the way back.

actually the 03's whistle louder out the pipe because they have less vanes inside the turbo....which was redone in 04 up, rumor to be because of alot of complaints...

Try the aero turbine muffler. I had one on my 04 Cummins and it whistled like a jet plane. Go to aero turbines website and find the sound clip on the 03 6.0. It sounds pretty amazing. The muffler is about $200. It sounds awesome. It wasn't too loud at idle but when you stepped on it, WOW! I am also considering and aero turbine, but want to find a few more sound clips.

if you want whistle do a 4" downpipe to a cat delete. after the cat delete dump a tip straight down or to the side. see sig for demonstration.

what if the turbo's been replaced on the 03, would it have gotten the updated one? and how would one go about removing the silencer ring?

you can remove it with a screw driver. but I don't think 03's have the silencer ring. as told by a diesel tech yesterday.

The 03's are the only turbo's that will get that great whistle sound. Unless you swap in a 03 turbo or an aftermarket turbo you will not get that particular whistle on your 04-current truck. No particular exhaust brand or size will give you the same sound from truck to truck. The silencer ring DOESN'T improve the whistle on the '04s, you have to have the ring machined in order to remove it from the turbo. Removing the cat and the muffler are the two things to do for more whistle for the 04-07 trucks.

it has to do with the number of vanes in the turbo, 03 had 10 vanes newer have 14 thats the difference. go to the guys a Long Island diesel send em your turbo and have them put the old style turbo vane in you will get the whistle. I am positive of you will be happy give them a call they will confirm what i am saying and their work is second to none. Hope this helps

Thanks for all of the input everybody. It really clears things up now. Only one more question. What month in 03 or 04, did they switch to the 14 vane turbo? I have a 1/04 build truck, but the turbo was replaced in March 06. Would the replacement turbo be an updated model, or do I have the 10 vane model? Thanks.

Your replacement should be a newer version. What has been said about the 03 vane numbers is true and is the reason for the louder "whistle". LIPD's upgraded compressor wheel made my 04 X really sing.

Is it the exhaust side or the intake side of the turbo that makes the truck whistle real loud? Either way, would I be able to find an 03 turbo and just swapp out one of the wheels?

the exhaust side had 10 impellers the intake side has 7. it's the exhaust side that makes it whistle. you have to get the entire turbo assembly and the pedestal to mount it on. I have pics of the pedestal in my thread "turbo cleaning pics".
