I have a '77 F250 Supercab XLT. The door panels are a little ratty, so I ordered XLT panels from NPD/Dennis Carpenter. They arrived today, but they don't have the padded insets at the top of the panel. These are the insets with the fake wood grain and plastic chrome border. They attach to the main ABS plastic door panel with plastic studs and push nuts. Dennis Carpenter says they don't reproduce this part of the panel, but may at sometime in the future. I could pull the inserts off the old panels, but I'd probably break the plastic studs off, plus they are a little worse for the wear also. Anybody have these new, or good used in Blue? Anyone have luck removing them from an old door panel?
I have re-installed those types of padded panels on new door panels (yes, most of the tabs will break off during removal) by drilling a small short pilot hole and using short pan head screws through the back of the door panel, through larger holes drilled in the door panel. Just be careful when tightening the screws to not go too far & puncture through the vinyl covering.
Sorry for bringing up an old post but, I am looking to replace my door panels and I have the inserts. Can I get just any door panel or do I need to get an XLT panel?
the basic mold is the same , just the insert makes it an Xlt or Lariat. Some colour shades are different also . An Xlt panel is a brighter red than tha red on a lariat panel for example, but the panel is still the same mold.
I have the black ones from Dennis Carpenter and the only difference is the chrome on the lower grill of the panel. No panels from anyone have any holes for inserts or the chrome molding. I had to make a pattern from another panel I had in order to drill the holes for the chrome molding. Turned out pretty decent.
I would like to see those inserts reproduced at some point. I think they would be a great seller.

I knew when I saw them advertising those panels as an XLT panel someone would think that they came with the woodgrain. Clearly they are misrepresenting the panel by advertising it as such. The picture they have is of a plain door panel with no woodgrain, that is the first clue it is not an XLT panel.
I would suggest only getting the ones from dennis carpenter. I got some from blue oval truck parts and they didn't fit worth a damn(I bet LMC just as poor). The XLT insets didn't fit in the area provided and the overall panel took hours of mods to fit. The DC ones were only a few dollars more, If I had to do it again I would have bought highest quality ones made.
Actually the 1st set, the bottom left and right, I only paid 250 bucks for, that was back in 2005. The guy had the left side as well and I got that for 150. About a month ago I found the right side on ebay and ended up winning it at 220 bucks. So I have 370 in my last set. Money well spent in my book but I have a severe addiction problem.
The real kicker is when I bought the 1st set he had another set of black ones for the same price but I was a little strapped for cash. I really wish I could of got those as well.

Thanks for the info. That is what I wanted to know. So now to find a good price on a set of black panels.
I found a set of almost perfect Ranger XLT door panels in a local salvage yard for the unbelievable price of $20 for the pair! 73 Ranger XLT door panels do not have woodgrain, they have a padded vinyl insert instead.

$370 isn't bad at all really. I spent $270 for the Dennis Carpenter panels which included the arm rests and black handle cups.
