2002 Explorer 4.0 SOHC powerchip
I have read other messages that state that a powerchip will provide for quicker shifts. Should I expect the same?
Another big question, I am hoping for the powerchip to improve fuel cost, but will I have to switch to premium fuel? If so, then the 5-10% improvement in mileage will be cancelled out by the higher cost of premium fuel. Is there anything offered that would help improve performance/mileage with 87 octane gas?
I installed a K & N filter, but otherwise the vehicle is stock.

Yes, it will definitely improve the sloppy shifting.

Yes.

Correct, your fuel costs will stay about the same.

Not with a chip. No such thing as free lunch (except with the Powerstroke chips which DO give a great mileage improvement).

The K&N will not make a difference in regards to programming a chip. Only when you make valve train changes, add headers, pulleys, Superchargers, etc., do you need custom code.
