Need some Help!! Swithed over to Amsoil sythetic oil from dino on F250 with 89,000 miles. Followed all the procedures, flushing engine, using a series of oil filters to catch the sludge. Since then, the truck smokes, leaving black soot on the chrome tip of exhaust, and mpg has dropped from 16 to 14 mpg. Does not seem to be using any more oil than it did prior to switching- 1 to 2 qts every 2-3000 miles. Have I done permanent damage to the engine? What would you recomend doing from this point? Will things improve over time, or gradually get worse? Hope none of you have had this problem, but if so, what did you do? '00 Ford 250, 4" exhaust from turbo, PowerChip(60hp). Thanks!!
Sounds to me like switching to the synthetic is loosening up all the gunk that has been building up in your motor since day 1. It does have a tendency to do that, and the result is that you're burning all that crap out of your motor. In the long run it probably will be good for it, but its going to go through some time while the synth cleans it out... Just my $.02, and brace yourself because I am going to guess there's some Amsoil flame coming up here...

quote from Amsoil: If you have been using petroleum oil and choose to switch to AMSOIL synthetic oil, don't forget to flush your engine with AMSOIL engine flush, the synthetic oil will clean your engine and dissolve the sludge into the motor oil. Sludge left behind by petroleum oil can clog oil ports and cause seizure of unlubricated components. Synthetic oil keeps your engine clean!
Well if he is still burning oil, that obviously means that oil is entering the combustion chamber where the crap thats stuck in there is getting burned off during driving.
This is from Royal Purple:
Cleaner Engines - Synthetic solvency cleans engines for maximum performance. If added to a dirty engine, shorten first oil and filter change to 3,000 miles.
More from Amsoil:
If you do not use the engine flush the AMSOIL Synthetic Motor Oil will do essentially the same thing the flush does but take a much longer period of time. During this time, which is greatly accelerated when using the AMSOIL engine Flush, the engine is going through a phase where these deposits are being removed, or have been removed. This can be as short as a few hundred miles or as long as a few thousand miles, depending on the internal condition of your engine. During this phase you may, or may not, notice slightly increased oil consumption BUT only until the uniform molecular structure of the AMSOIL Synthetic Motor Oil can re-seal these microscopic valleys.
So if I were you, I would probably change my oil filter maybe halfway to your 3,000 miles on this one, at 1500 miles, then change the oil at 3000. Should be good and cleaned out by then i would think.
I think what gseeders means (w/o tounge in cheek) is unless something is really off, lube oil and fuel stay seperate in the motor. Please correct me if I am wrong gseeders. So while the syn-oil may be freeing up gunk in the crankcase/bottom end, unless you have wbbb (wicked bad blow by) or something, none of that gunk should be making it to the combustion chamber.
Black smoke can be from excess fuel. You have a 60hp chip, so your dumping in more fuel, generally. Not having enough air can give symptoms of too much fuel. How's the air filter?
Dunno, but I think the smoke and changing to synthetic might be coincidental. But what do I know, I'm just killing time at work.
