I have to replace the compressor on a 1991 ranger 2.3 engine I will convert to 134a when I do this. I will buy a new drier to go along with the new compressor. My question is can I buy a drier for a 94 ranger 2.3 engine and expect it to fit. If it will then i will have the right low pressure fitting and not have to bother with the adapter on that side. Might do a liquid hose for 94 for the same reason if they are the same the only difference being the port fittings. I don't have a 94 to look at.

Sometimes you can do this, most times you can't. It depends on the vehicle. The fittings were often purposly made different to prevent the use of R-12 parts on R-134a systems. The easiest way to find out is to take your old parts with you and match them up. The desiccant in the accumulator will be compatible either way. The R-12 cycling switch can be adjusted for R-134.
There's no real advantage to not using the retrofit fittings, IF you use quality fittings. The aluminum fittings sold at the chain stores are junk. NAPA carries the "real" fittings.
I did it. I bought a drier for 1994 it fits perfectly the only gotcha is the pressure switch fitting is a different size so I had to buy it also, an addition $15.00. But it is tuned for R134a I used the r134a orfice tube. Used a retrofit high pressure adapter was able to pull and hold over 29 inches of vaccum for over 2 hrs. Charged system and it is making ice cold air.

Great. It sounds like you got the system nice and tight. You should be chillin' for a long time to come.
