I need to know what would cause my truck to push everything through the defrost. It doesn't matter what setting I pick, it all comes out of the the slots by the windshield. Any ideas?
Do I look for those under the dash or the hood? If under the dash, do I need to take it appart to see whatever it is I am looking for? If under the hood, do you know what general area I would be looking at?
might want to listen for a whistle under the dash. one of the lines may have fallen off the back of the unit. check the front hub vac lines. there are alot of things that could be leaking.....unfortunately. sorry i cant help more than that.
My brother told me that my 01 SD is doing the same thing. It starts blowing to the floor until you hit the gas then it blows through the defrost. I hope someone can help before the garage gets a hold of it.
It's that stupid ESOF- when you bust a vacuum line for the 4x4, the vent system that runs off the same (and only) vacuum system in the truck, will default to defrost for safety purposes. Check your front hub lines for a break or leak somewhere in the system
Well, the two most common problems have already been nailed...burned out vacuum pumps and something wrong with the 4x4 lines if you've got ESOF.
The Diesels use an electric vacuum pump to generate the vacuum to run the ESOF 4x4 and the climate control. The vacuum pump is located near the vacuum reservoir, under the hood on the passenger side near the firewall. It should make a little noise every now and then over there. Easiest way to tell is to snap the key to on and listen for it to run for a period and then stop when it has enough vacuum stored up in the reservoir. It shouldn't keep running and never quit, and if it never runs at all you probably have a bad pump.
So if I have a vacuum leak the pump could/should run continuously depending on how severe the leak is, right? The pump does come on and turn off after about 5 seconds if I am hearing the right sound. The sound is a very loud "BUZZ". I don't know how else to describe it. I visually checked the vacuum lines going to the hubs and they all look good. I recently used the 4x4 and it did engage and disengage without issue. I will take a drive this afternoon and see if the 4x4 is also having an issue. It seems that if one works then they all should if it is the pump. However, I am a Payson High School Graduate, so I could be wrong.
Well, I just came back from my drive and my 4X4 isn't engaging. I don't know what "BUZZ" sound I am hearing, but it must not be the vacuum pump. Since I am over my 30,000 miles would this still be covered, or am I going to have to cover it all?
Well, with all the crap I hear about dealers, I have to say, Smith Ford in Spanish Fork couldn't have done any better. I dropped off my truck at 9:00 and 10:30 is when I got the call saying the vacuum pump was done and all was well. Thanks again to everyone.
