Rear differential leaking

I jsut bought a 2000 F150. I knew that the Rear differential was leaking, what do I look for to determine how to fix this? I am not very mechnically inclined and I do not really understand some of the terms that someone versed in mechnics... So please keep it stupid simple...

well, i have a 97 F150 and my diff was leaking too, so i dropped the diff cover by taking out all the bolts and lightly prying all the way around with a putty knofe to break the seal, look out tho, the fluid is real messy, let it drain and remove all the old seal with a putty knife, clean the cover and the edge of the diff where the seal is with a rag and some carb cleaner, get some black silicone gasket stuff, follow the instructions on the tube for applying it, make sure it is a high heat blend, put the cover back in place ans tighten the bolts like you are tightening the lugs on a wheel, torque the bolts to what the factory recomends, i dont remember what that was, then fill with new fluid, hopefully that takes care of it.

Hopefully it is the cover and not a pinion seal. That will require a bit more. Before we discuss at situation you should determine it is the problem. I hope for the cover. If it is the cover leaking, look for any rolled edges (high spots) on the diff surface. If there, file down and clean before installing the cover.

Check to see where it is leaking from. The above post is for a differential cover leak. The pinion can be leaking, and that is best left to a shop, unless you have air impact tools. The axle seals can also be leaking, and that will require replacing the brake shoes if you have drum brakes (I believe these trucks have a small drum inside of the brake rotor if they have rear disk brakes). The axle seals require removal of the rear cover, and then removing the wheel assembly and removing the C-Clips and removing the axle. I recommend replacing the bearing while its all apart and using new fluid (motorcraft 75w-140 synthetic). I suggest you pick up a haynes or chilton manual for your truck, as it will have detailed instructions and pictures that will help out a lot.

Thanks for the advice, I was looking under the truck and the leak seems to be where the drive shaft connects to the differential, so the leak would be in the front facing side. The would be the pinion... right?
