Well I'm looking at a 98 F150 XL. It has the 4.2 V6 and an auto trans in it. Its a reg cab stepside. It's a 2wd.
I drive 60 miles a day back and forth to work, I currently drive a 96 CV back and forth and it gets 22 mpg, so if I could get 20+ out of this truck I would consider it, seeing as I need a truck, but a car is a must for back and forth now. 44 of those miles are highway.
Our 98 F150 4x4 Ext Cab SB fleetside with the 4.6 V8 got 17 mpg, so is it unreasonable to think this thing would get 20+?
I would think that the 4.2 would be a little wimpy, but it should get over 20mpg (hopefully someone that owns one will chime in). We had a 03 Durango 2wd with the 4.7 and it got 20ish hwy. Traded it for a caliber that gets 30ish. I refuse to drive it.

Power isn't a real issue here. I got a 4x4 GMC with a 350, and I got a 85 F150 with a V6 (plenty of power towing tractors).
Main thing is I would like a pickup for a daily driver, i have to haul steel alot and building supplies, so the only trailer I would pull is a small utility trailer.
you got two trucks and you drive 60 miles a day? what you need is a 2002 Taurus that gets 30 MPG for the highway.
What I need is a truck that gets mileage as good or better than my car. 10MPG don't cut it when you need to run to the nearest "city" to get stuff. And they are 150 miles away for me.
If you are getting 10 mpg then then there is somthing wrong with your truck... The worst i have heard of from sombody that actually owns a full size F-150 is 15mpg on the interstate... i get almost 19 with no wind at 70mph on the interstate... this is only my personal experiances's but i expect a bit better after i swap my 5.4l in and tune it properly just for the simple fact that it wont work so hard to pull the same weight up and down hills..and also search for O/D so much...and i will be making more HP than a stock 04 at the crank ( I hope..well see) after my mods and tuning, i should have a good looking truck as well as one that runs hard and pulls harder than any other stock half tone made...well see... only the dyno will tell... good luck and god bless.
