I have a 02 XLT with the loud rear end everyone is complaining about. It has 105K miles on it. The rear was serviced by the dealer in 04 when I purchased it at 59K miles. The servicing took care of the noise but it has returned. Does anyone know exactly what is causing this problem and how it can be repaired permanently? I also heard about someone replacing the rear with a chevy part?
if you have a noise at 55-65 MPH then that is the gear whine. if you can hear it at any speed above 10 MPH then its probably the wheel bearing. that would not be uncommon with 105k miles.--- if you have the gear whine, it can be reduced by using synthetic gear lube, with a friction modifier, and make sure it is up to level and not any low.--- if you hear it at other speeds- check wheel bearings.
I'm going to check the wheel bearings, but I'm pretty sure its the rear b/c this is the exact same problem its had before. Its the exact same noise the rear end repair got rid of when it was repaired at 59K. The noise occurs at all speeds though....
the gear noise is a whine like a high speed vibration. back off on the throttle and it changes pitch real quick... if the noise sounds like pushing a box over a gravel road, its the bearings.
Just had R-rear wheel bearing and hub replaced on 03 Thought it was rear end noise but checked it my self and found it was a wheel bearing noise. J W Miller
