coolant flush question

After reading some coolant threads here I am going to get some motorcraft premium gold from the dealer and 2 bottles of additive. This is my first psd,, can anyone tell me the best way to flush the coolant system and refill? I just want to do it right the first time. Thanks.

A coolant filter is a very good thing. Do it! Save your time effort and money and go get the test strips to test the coolant first to see if it needs additive or flushed. 'then go from there. I got the test strips from NAPA, as well as the coolant filter stuffs. Much better deals can be had from online shopping. Hope this helps.

Here is the criteria in my mind. If you are the new owner of the truck and have no idea when it was last changed. Have it done or do it yourself by pulling the block drains and do it right. If you start with a clean slate, you do not need to worry about test strips at all. The motorcraft additive is added when you first do the complete change (oz per gallon mix), then you only have to add a few ozs every 12,000 miles. I personally would not waste time with test strips as long as you keep a good log on when you put the additive in and when it needs to be put in. My 2 cents........

By the way, it is worth paying someone 79.00 for the whole job if you do not have a garage area at your house. It is messy when the block drains come out. Be sure however to demand that NO cut is put in your hoses and the front drain and block drains are the only thing used. Some places will simply cut your lower hse and put a splice in to do it quickly.

Thanks for the replies and valuable info. I am going to drain the system and start from scratch. I just bought this psd with 240k, it's a one owner but as I go thru it I'm finding the routine maintenance was not done well.

Unless your heater isn't working or something don't try flushing the coolant. It opens you up to too many potential problems and leaks. Just drain and refill it at regular intervals. I recommend the prestone 50-50 premix antifreeze and a bottle of the diesel additive when you do it.

Places that offer coolant and or transmission flushes are scams. They flush it out with recycled stuff that is usually worse than what they take out. I wouldn't want someone else's antifreeze in my engine. Just in case you were thinking about having a shop do it.

That is almost the rule, not the exception. If you buy a PSD @ 100,00 like I did, you can nearly always bet that alot of the PM has not been done on it. Coolant, front/rear diffs, transfer case, brakes, and the list goes on and on.
