hello all- i have an 02 Explorer XLT that i picked up about 6 months ago- blue/tan leather, V6, 4wd, 36K for $12,000. very very nice shape and ive been happy with it so far. however, i noticed that the headliner (passenger side- right near the visor) was discolored and figured that i had developed a water leak. it wasnt bad at all until today. there was a driving rain while the truck was parked and when i got in- the floor was sopping wet (passenger side front- along the sill panel) water also leaked out of the map lights/sunroof switch.
my question is... is this a 'known' problem? is it a common problem?
windshield leak or sunroof leak?
can i seal it on the exterior with some silicone-type sealant?
i have an 02 without the sun roof. never had a leak, never heard of this problem... i would set inside and have kids spray the window with garden hose. see where the leak is at. i think you are right. a tube of black RTV might be a good fix if you can narrow it down to a specific section.
If you have a sunroof, there is a drain hose that catches any water that leaks by the gasket around the glass. It runs from the sun roof to the passenger side A-pillar, then down to the bottom of the body and drains out. If this line gets clogged, then it will back up and get the passenger side headliner wet.
I've never cleaned the hose before, but i would start by trying to remove the headliner and find the hose. You can then find the ends and clean it out.
well- i removed the visor/headliner and removed the drain hose. i couldnt find where it ended but i was able to blow through it. initially- it felt like it was clogged, but i was able to open it up.
i ran a hose over the sunroof for a few minutes and it didnt leak- so, hopefully that was it.
