i have an 83 ranger 4wd shortbed. i want to get rid of the c5 and get a five speed put in my old ranger. my question is what type of five speed should i be looking for? toyo kogyo, mitsubishi, or mazda? also what will i be looking at as far as driveshaft length issues? all advice given would be very much appreciated, thanks and God Bless!
ok then, well what kind of driveshaft issues would i be running into?, that is my other main concern, and how does this lil transmission hold up? i dispise the c5 because first gear is too tall, i can run almost 45 mph in first, makes for slow bottom end take off. i want the five speed for take off reasons and a lil help with gas mileage. any opinions or answers would be greatly appreciated!

also what kind of gear ratios are the gears for the simple four speed toyo, i heard today that it was the same length as the c5 which would mean not having to worry about driveshaft lengths.
The Mazda M5R1 is a much better transmission and will hold up just fine for your purposes. It was installed in Rangers starting in '88 (although the Mitsubishi FM146 was also used up to '92)
The 2.8, 2.9 and 4.0 share the same bellhousing bolt pattern so look for a truck with one of those engines to ensure the tranny will bolt up. The M5R1's only real problem was a tendancy for the 3 rubber shift rail plugs to soften with age and fall out, causing oil loss. They can be easily replaced with metal soft plugs.
Since your truck is 4X4, driveshaft length shouldn't be an issue as I believe (and I could be wrong here...) that the transfer cases were in the same location on these trucks regardless of transmission. You will of course need a tranny out of a 4X4 truck in order to have the correct tailshaft to mount to the transfer case.
