ErroeS. Ya don't need any of that stuff in my opinion. Ya need one line from the Dizzy to the bottom of the carb for spark advance. Leave the other line off the Dizzy. A line to the Modulator on the tranny. PCV to Air filter or base plate under carb. And the Brake booster to base of carb or a big port on the intake. This should be all ya need to make it run right without any smog stuff. The yellow thing on the T-stat housing looks good the way it is. The one like it on the back of the intake may need plugged as it may open at operating temp. Or use it for your vac can for the AC like Dennis said.
I've not seen any diagrams that show transmission or brakes though.. hell, I just now realized there was a line to transmission, which I'm sure isn't hooked up.
Brake booster is at the master cylinder, right? I think I saw it somewhere. anyone have a picture of where the line comes off of the transmission?
But if you all say that it's OK to run constant vacuum to this stuff, I trust you. Makes things a lot easier for me anyways..
It's sort of tough because I can't just go look outside to work on my truck, or to look at stuff. It's over at my mother's house, who was nice enough to kick out her boyfriend so I could have her garage.. sometimes I can go check it out and say "oh, THERE is where it goes" and other times I can't.
Where the vacuum from the transmission comes from..
but before you go out and take pictures of stuff, let me take a look at my truck. I think I know what I'm doing now and I'll probably be able to find anything I need.
In the last diagram that Dennis showed (#32). Take everything in it off and hang it on the wall as a reminder that you was there. The one marked Manifold Vacuum would go to the trans. Should be another one there that goes to the big air can behind the brake master cyl. Plug the Dizzy into the one marked Venturi. Plug EGR port.
That actually tempts me into yanking mine off, but I just reworked it.....haha.
Looks like there is another manifold vacuum source. Does it vary by application? I only have the rear vacuum tree with the big hose going to the brake booster on the '79.
I really got in there today since I knew what I was looking for.. definitely have a vacuum leak at that tree.
Transmission is hooked up, brake is hooked up, one is plugged and the other has a cut hose on it. Brake booster line definitely needs redone, it looks horrible.. those highres pictures of your engine bay are great Mil1ion, extremely helpful..
Oh, in those pics I'm curious about a couple of things.. you have the passenger valve cover running to the EGR at the back of the carb? and a closed oil cap with no PCV?
You all are going to hate me.. I still haven't gotten it yet.
This truck was in good shape when I bought it but I let it sit for 5 years with little maintance, I'm really paying for it now. So far a bunch of small jobs have turned into REALLY big jobs, a lot of "Oops, I shouldn't have leaned on that" kind of stuff.. but I am replacing a lot of rusted away junk, it's just taking me a lot of time.
Can't believe all of this started with "might as well change the spark plugs and oil", a month later and my truck still isn't running. Not a bad thing, I've learned a ton from you all and from working on it. The truck will be A LOT better off when all is said and done, so I definitely don't regret any of this.
Anyways, enough of that tangent.
I have the PVS tree, 3 sticking up, 3 to the side. EGR at the back of the carb (egr on the intake was clogged, valve itself is fine), brake booster, transmission modulator and AC hooked up to the tree in the rear (AC goes through firewall in 3 different spots which I find weird, but whatever.. it also goes to the canister)
So basically,
Vacuum advance goes to ("D") on the tree on the thermostat housing. Something comes off of the thermostat housing (I have an "I" and something else) to a T at the spark point, which goes into a egr delay valve which goes into the EGR valve.
brake booster, trans modoulator and AC go straight to the tree that goes directly into the manifold.
The top tree on the thermostat housing can all be plugged off?
or is that all wrong? I'm going to read through this thread again tomorrow with a fresh mind now that I'm going to try to tackle the vacuum again.. before I tear into my drivetrain components... I should be able to understand what was said a lot better than the first time I asked.
and I'm about ready to pull all of my AC stuff, it really gets in the way. It doesn't blow cold anymore (accidently vented it while working on my valve train.. don't ask) and even if it did I doubt I would use it. I hate that AC box with a passion.
I see no air pumps, boosters or anythign else. The only thing that I do have is something that looks ismiler to the EGR valve that goes straight into my block (I think, might be the intake) that has a single electical connection.. probably not even related, it's just really close to the T.
