Question stock heads ported ?

How much does it cost to get a machine shop to port my current stock heads. I went to a shop about 7 months ago and they said they would resurface, grind valves, magnaflux, and check for cracks for 160 bucks. I'm wandering how much more for the porting. I know there will prolly be more $$ with new springs and everything for a performance cam that I will use. I'm just curious.

unless they do them a lot or have someone that does them I would not let them do it. Plus it would cost you a bunch to pay someone...do it yourself before they do any work to the seats and valves.

here are some pics to help you along......

I have a set of 87 5.0 truck heads I think they are like E6's or E5's that I was trying to practice on. I have a 1971 302 with original heads. Would it be better If I used the newer heads I'm practicing on (that is if I do a good job) or should I port the original ones? Oh, When I started porting the 87 heads I only cleaned up the heads with some degreaser and then sprayed some wd40 on them so they wouldn't flash rust. I did not get them checked by a machine shop before. Should I have the heads checked before I finish them. I have only ported the exhaust side for two cylinders so far.

Thanks hemieater, I saw your dyno video and your idle video and there awesome. Let me ask you, why did you go with the solid lifters? Do they make the came sound better (rougher)?

So it doesn't make the idle rougher but it makes it sound better right? what type of push rods do you use with solid lifters...are they the same?

I used Trick Flow push rods on that motor....
I just like the tick you get from them. I have those adjusted to .015 and when they are the same it has a nice even ticking sound...when one gets out of adjustment you know it. So far they have mantained .015 with little adjustments...

Plus when you here it idle from the front you can hear the rockers.....you know it's not stock....
