Thanks, Men. Bobby, they're FROSTY CHICKEN HANDLES!! They were in the truck when I bought it, and I thought they had a cool, original, fifties look to them, so I stripped them and repainted. They are heavy duty rings that i would guess were designed for rigging, as they have a split in them, with 2 holes, and a heim joint is thru bolted allowing them to swivel and takes the place of 3/8" bed mounting bolts. I'll put a close up in the upcoming gallery.
I would like to see a close up pic of those. That is a neat deal for hauling stuff.
It's white oak, Ross. It started as rough hewn lumber, (100$) and a woodworking bud of mine with an awesome wood shop offered to cut, plane, mill, sand and rabbit the boards for me, gratis. 6 hours with me helping, prolly 4 without.. he has a belt sander that does boards up to 40" wide with diff. grit belts, so finish sanding was minimal. a little 180, a little 220, a little 320. I sealed with ragged on pure tung oil, 4 coats. Followed with Minwax spar varnish. I used the whole quart of satin sanding tween each coat with 320. I was never happy with the satin ( i didn't think I wanted it too glossy) So I ended up applying 1 1/2 pints of clear gloss on the last 5 coats sanding between each. Sanded last couple coats with 600 paper using mineral oil as a lubricant. Finally, I buffed it with a Dewalt foam pad and an automotive glaze called "Blackfire". I wish you could see it in person, the foto's early in this thread are pretty good, but the finish is furniture quality in person. It looks like a half inch of water standing on it. I am not tooting my own horn here, cuz I'm certainly no woodworking guru, but I could not be happier with the results.
Jim, I could tell from the pics that it has depth. That is why I made the comment about plexiglas. The finish is very flat and it reflects the effort and it is obvious you did a first class job. When you don't toot your own, the bed will toot it for you anyway. Just stand back and enjoy the stares and comments when people look into the bed. It makes it all worth iy. So......when will you loan the truck to the brother in law so he can move a load of gravel.???
