If you have ever driven a tractor, then you will understand what a pto is. The pto powers the attachments. Like on a tracor, the pto powers a bush hog, seeder, and many other things you put behind it. It basically does the same thing. It powers attachments.
But are most plows run own on pumps and hydraulics and not by the engine or the transmission. Like a Fisher plow
Anything running off the transmission is running off the PTO. I don't actually know anything about snowplow option just was using it as an example. You can also use it for a dump bed or other things
Here in the FDNY, our apparatus all use a PTO (power take-off) to power the main function of the unit. For example, PTO powers the pumps in the engine companies to drive the impellers that create water pressure, and in the ladders, the PTO powers the hydraulics to enable the use of the tower ladders and such. Basically the engine goes into PTO by throwing a few switches and enables the transmission to power the unit that is attached to it. This disengages the drive axles but engages the PTO unit. So you're actually in "drive" but are not moving. Rather, the engine is cranking and the transmission is powering the accessory. Basically, it is using the power that is already there, namely the drivetrain.
Where can you find accessories for PTO's? I'd like to know if they make PTO powered air compressors for light duty trucks that don't require a radiator like the ones mounted on commercial trucks. I'm guessing it's for cooling the oil.
I've been looking for some smaller than that. The lightest model avaliable from those 2 dealers is over 300 lbs. And they all still require a cooling system. I'll probably end up buying an electric system, those look like they cost a pretty penny.

For the main part, manually driven air compressor pumps found on commercial vehicles will tend to be belt driven and incorporated into the engine drive belt such as an a/c compressor or the power steering pump. They will have automatic purge valves which will purge out the excess pressure since it is creating pressure constantly as long as the engine is running. This allows for constant availability of energy rather than having to go into PTO for power.
