We have a 2000 F350 dually. Yesterday, when it was started, the overdrive on/off light started blinking. The truck wouldn't shift properly. We were pulling a trailer. We pulled over frequently so that the transmission would not overheat. After a while, the truck did start to shift. When we got home my husband checked all the fuses. Fuse #19 (the one that has something to do with overdrive) was not blown. There was a loose wire on the after market transmission temp gage that was installed, but I think that should effect only the gage, not the overdrive. Today it is shifting fine and the light is not blinking. Could a loose fuse or something simple have caused this, or is there something much more sinister and expensive lurking?
Thanks,
Jody
Hey Jody. when your OD light starts blinking this is an indication that there is a problem with in the tranny. It appears when overheating the Trans. It was a good idea to pull over when you suspected that your tranny was hot. Unfortunatly it usually comes along with some damage to the Transmission. More so if you are experiencing the symtoms that you are, erratic shifting the blinking OD etc. Make sure that you reconnect the Transmission gauge. If you are able, get the fluid and filter changed. The fluid loses its lubricity and cooling properties once its heated to the extreme. You could always take it too A Tranny tech that you trust to check it out. One that won't try to sell you a Tranny rebuild. But then don't mention the problem you had to him either. A friend of mine had the same problem but a bit more severe in that his got so hot that the tranny fluid boiled out and onto to the ground. He got it home and had a tranny tech do the inspection. He said the fluid smelled burnt and that it needed to be serviced. His tranny is fine to this day. Lets hope yours is still ok. I'll try to get Kwikk or Amiller to chime in here also. Thery are very experienced in this are as well.. Take Care.. Country

Not an expert by any means and I am sure that someone with more experience will chime in eventually but I can still take a stab. Wondering if maybe you do not have a bad Variable Speed Sensor or VSS? It is located on the rear end and it counts revolutions of the axle and then sends a signal to the PCM and that controls shifting. A symptom of a bad VSS is a blinking OD light and erratic shifting (among other things). You might have someone with a scanner check the truck for codes and see what comes out.
The flashing OD light is the truck's way of telling you that the computer picked up a sensor(s) in the transmission that was out of parameters. Do not take this lightly, do not drive on this if you can avoid it. You need to get it to a shop that has the ability to read diesel codes, preferably a tranny shop, not the dealer. Dealers just tell you your tranny is toast and make you replace the whole shebang when all you might need is a converter. If there is something wrong, and you continue to drive it, microscopic pieces of debris can make thier way throughout the tranny and make a simple fix into a major fix. The place to start is with getting the codes pulled though.
I had these symptoms that were resolved with replacing the VSS:
1. Blinking OD light on the shift lever.
2. Erratic shifting
3. Speedo that didn't work below 25MPH
4. Slightly worse gas mileage.
Replacing the VSS is not difficult at all. Napa stores typically have the part in stock. Mine cost me about $25 but it's been months so I can't be 100% certain of the price.
2002 f150 v6 gas. Started all of a sudden without warning. Will not even go into neutral, OD light is blinking, engine chugs. I read this thread and will try to replace the vss before taking it to the sharks. Can anyone tell me where the vss is located?
It is just an electrical sensor that fits into a hole on the top of your rear-end with a wire connector attached to it.. Napa's P/N is 530780.. they call it a ABS sensor.. see www.napaonline.com $10.49..
