octane boost + 87 octane with a diablo chip?
In the FAQs section about chips, on MotorHaven's site, it indicates 91 is required and 93 is recommended. I was wondering about the octane requirement. Can you run 87 or 89 and add some octane boost? The reasons behind the question are economics and performance(I know, I know economical and performance don't usually go together). Some of the octane boosts on the market run between $5-10 per bottle, but others, like STP, can be bought for about $2. If running 87 w/ an inexpensive octane boost would be acceptable I figure the savings would be about $125 per year with the amount of miles I drive(25-30,000).
Also even if I run 92(or91.5) should I add octane boost to bring it up to 93? Last year when gas prices were going out of control some of the stations here in California reduced their premium grade from 92 to 91.5. Will I notice a difference in performance between 93 and 91.5?
Any benefits to running higher than 93 octane?
Are there any short or long term detrimental effects to adding octane boost?
Thanks for your time
Tim

No. It will ping. Generally the octane booster you buy on the shelf will only increase octane a point at best, even the stuff that claims 5 octane points. I know from personal experience when my wife put 87 in the tank by mistake. The only time its helped me is if I'm already running 93 and I take a load into the mountains --- then I add a bottle of it and it helps keep it from pinging on the hills. In my case, I have a chip that has its timing really far advanced. Most people won't need octane booster with premium.
Because you generally pick up a little mileage with the chip running premium, economically your costs stay about the same.

Probably not enough to tell.
>Any benefits to running higher than 93 octane?
Only if it pings, it will reduce the pinging.

No, not really.
I'm trying be patient and not to go down to the mailbox and wait for the mailman but I do tend to suffer from the "I want what I want and I want it now" syndrome or is it the "I neeeed it" syndrome.
Thanks again
Tim
