I am replacing the oil cooler seals on my '95 PSD. They are leaking like a siv. Is there any reason to replace the oil cooler and the end caps also? I live in the rust belt and wonder if the end caps and the oil cooler corrode and whether it would be worth the money to just replace the whole oil cooler assembly? What do you think? Anyone done this and found they needed to replace everything?
You posted in that link too, are you just now getting around to fixing it? The end caps can rot out and leak like you suggested. If you suspect that to be the case you might want to replace the whole thing. Big $$ tho.
Yes, just getting around to it. I have had other things on the plate. Things the wife wanted me to finish. As for cost, it is all cheaper doing it myself, right. Just seems to take a bit longer!
If there isnt any damage to the caps then just replace the orings. WORD of advice. DO NOT follow the haynes manual instructions for replacing the orings. The manual says to place the outer rings in the caps before pressing them back on. This is dead wrong, you will cut the rings this way. Place both sets of rings on the oil cooler then press the caps on.
Yep. Funny how you learn your truck has all kinds of parts on it good for haulin' when the parts start leaking. I would rather not know and just have them work! BTW, incase you want to know, parts total for end caps, new seals and gaskets, and a new cooler was just about $500. I don't want to have to do this again for a long while.
