Problems can range from killing a battery to smoking the ignition system including the Ign Coil.
If it is an old type Points & Cond system, I would just R&R all the parts and check the Ign coil for output capacity & polarity. If you are in doubt with the older points type ign just change everything including the coil and you should be okay.
If you have upgraded to a breakerless Ignition, check the Parameters of your module to see if you're still in tolerance. If not swap your Module for new.

Well I just went out and checked on the truck and she fired right up no problems. Could there still be a problem? Will something go wrong soon? I started it three different times 10 minutes apart with no problems.
IMHO, don't feel there should be a problem except the fact will run the battery down. There have been an occasional senior moment when inadvertenly left ign. on to either find batt. dead, or just enough to get the truck started. If you have issue with wire's getting hot with ign. on then, in my opinion, there is a problem with that particular circuit.
Like I said, problems can range from~to etc. If you have no problems then drive on.
IF you've a point's system and it just happened to leave them open instead of closed
the entire time, then nothing would happen. But that's a lucky "just happened" IMHO.
If you develop ignition problems in a little while you'll have a clue, if not you're in free.
All things considered, I'd drive it & see what happens.

Thanks to all who replied, so far so good. At least I'll know what to do if a problem arises and I know all the parts needed thanks to ND. You guys are great!!
