What is the difference between a points ignition and an electronic ignition on my 390? are there any other types of ignition sysytems that came stock? what should i use for an ignition system?
thnx
it all depends on what you are going for. i still have the points system, my truck is mostly stock and only comes out on sunny days to go for a cruse. it's still dependable, and that's the way i want my truck. but if you are going for custom and or preformance defanately go for electronic. it creates a hotter spark and it's one less thing to fine tune
Points are old school. Electronic is new age. Points will work fine, but the new electronic stuff will work better. About early 70's they switched over to Duraspark(electronic). Easy to get, easy to convert, easy to wire up(from what I've read).
That being said, I run both types. Mallory dual points in truck, Mallory Unilite(electronic) in race car, factory single points in blown 390. They all will work. If you run points just plan on replacing them every year(maybe 25K miles).
The only real problem with the Duraspark is the module from what I have experienced. It is not a question of if it will fail, the question is when will it fail, I carry a spare. The Motorcraft ones last the longest, but not forever.
............and THAT'S the reason I don't run it.
Points will still give you some warning that they are getting old. Plenty of time to pick up a set and get them installed.
One problem is not geting the proper instalation done. Use the proper coil ie it should be an eletronic one like fits a 78 up. Module blue strip DuraSpark II best one to use. Make sure you have run circut getting 6v and start circuit 12v. Get right diaghram and use good parts and put her in and go for it. Pros Less bucking cold more pep better mileage. I wouldn't buy a new truck without an electronic system would you? Con Time spent.
My 2 cents.

I'm old school and use points in my old mech advance dual point dizzy. The problem with the points today is the quality of the parts. Most part houses give you the cheapo B brand. I use Ford NOS when I can find them or Accel otherwise. G.
Rusty, your on target with Blue Streak. Look at their dizzy caps, brass lugs for the rotor to fire on, not aluminum that burns away and corrodes. I have and can use a cap up to 200,000 miles, call me cheap but if it performs, why replace it.
my latest project is a 1965 ford falcon 2 door post street car...
it is going to have dual point dist....as I am restoring it to only
tech that was available in the 60's.....
as for my ranger it is all MSD electronic....
on a side note how long has it been since any of you pulled the charged condenser
prank??
