harley question

ok, so i know a lot of people love the sound of a harley idling or whatnot, but i much rather prefer the sound it makes when you let off the throttle after putting the ***** to the wall...you know the BAAAAAHHHH sound that is usually louder than when you were giving it gas in the first place, it only happens at above 3500 on my 883, what makes that sound?

My guess would be the engine is making that sound. (kidding) I personally hate the way Harleys (and any v-twin cruiser) sounds. They all sound like lawnmowers.

Don't know why it would be louder -- if it is. When you back off, the wheels are actually turning the engine faster than it wants to go -- might have something to do with it.

As for the sound of a Big V -- love it. It's hard for me to believe that anyone wouldn't, but to each his/her own. I will say that the sound (and looks) of Harleys prompted a lot of Japanese bike makers to come up with twins of their own.

Harleys do not sound like lawnmowers. Maybe your lawnmower sounds like a Harley.

Yup, and Harley copied what a lot of the British bike manufactuers were doing. Its not as if Harley invented the "chopper/cruiser" style. Its more the post WW2 styling, you might be surprised to know that Honda and Yamaha were making bikes in the cruiser style long before they ever started selling them in America.
I personally think that a crotchrocket sounds way better than any Harley, but as you said, to each his own. Sorry boys, Harleys dont impress me. I dont see the big thrill of a bike that is all show and no go. No offense to anyone who likes Harleys, just not my style. You know, its kinda like those kids you see who have Civics with body kits, big wings on the back, fartpipe exhaust, low pros, lowered suspension, racing seats and "Type-R" badging but they have a stock 1.5L engine under the hood.
To answer the question of the original poster, I think the noise you are hearing is just the harmonics of the engine that comes from the throttle being closed and the drivetrain forcing the engine to spin faster than it wants.

Harleys have had the Big V for a long time -- at least since the 20's. No, they didn't invent the style, but they did make it popular.

Harley nearly went under when AMF took them over. They tried to make all styles of bikes, and their quality went to crap. They came back and focused on their own style -- to the point that the Japanese were importing them in large numbers. That's when their motorcycle industry started copying them big time.

Crotch rockets and Big V's are like diesel-electric trains and steam engines.
One has the performance -- but, a lot of people like the style of the other.

I agree. But, of course, power and handling are my main buying points...which the Harley severely lacks.

Funny thing is...my dad loves the big cruiser bikes. For a year, he test drove Harley's and Yamaha's big twins...but ended up with a Suzuki V-Strom 1000.

Oh well...to each his own. I'll take a CBR1000RR in a heart beat!
