I bought a 1978 f 250 crewcab short bed, my problem is the left rear parking brake cable is broken. I have ordered 2 [1 from LMC and 1 from Car Quest, the ford dealer say's no longer available.:[ the problem with both is there not long enough in the cable area. Any one have one or know where to get one? Thanks Rick
i had similar problems. check your wheelbase in inches and try to give them that. napa is usually the best parts store to buy from. sometimes your brake parts are from a year back model. my 77 f350 was built 2/77, but has the same cables as my 76 f350. go figure. theres no way my truck received left over at model year changeover time, not 7 months into model year production. you could also measure the length of the cable and conduit and that may help you figure the right cable out.
I understand your grief --- happened to me to. I finally took my cable off and went in to the shop where they measured it and then called the supplier and told them how long I needed. Maybe try the same.
Unfortunately, when the cable broke somebody else pulled it out and threw it away. The casing length is the same as any other truck. Where the end of the casing connects to the bed support beam to where the end of the cable should be is roughly 45 1/2 inches. Sorry that I don't know the exact length of the cable. Thanks for your help. Rick
r.roop1,
First letter of the day is FORD never made anything the same, The cables I have here are from a camper special. one measures 68'' and the other measures 61'' from the backing plate to the end that goes under the cab at the point where the two cables meet the one from the cab. I will put two pic's in my gallery of the frame measurements to show you the attaching points. If these will help you out send me a private message and we will work something out.
Stop right now. The parts books are wrong, period. Then some aren't stocked any more.
If you want the correct PB cable or a custom made cable give this guy a call. You will be glad you did.

1978 F250 Crew Cab ~ 1973/79 Ford Light Truck Parts catalog ~ Section 23.2 / Parts List # 40D
I verified the parts are obsolete from Ford, but FTE sponsor GREEN SALES has all the cables, the connectors, but DOES NOT have the cable extensions. GREEN SALES = 800-543-4959
2WD
D7TZ-2A635-C .. Right Rear Brake Cable
D7TZ-2A635-D .. Left Rear Brake Cable
The 2WD's also have brake cable connectors and rear brake cable extensions.
Zoomeroo, while parts catalogs aren't perfect, usually when parts are wrong is when the information provided by the customer is wrong. There are 12 different brake cables listed for 1977/79 F250 CC's. Six 2WD & six 4WD, the difference is the serial numbers, with the 77's alone listing EIGHT, the other four fit both 1978 & 1979. I verified what the 1978 F Series serial numbers began with, and listed the CORRECT parts.

My 71F350 had no emergency brake cables when purchased except for a rusty piece in middle of frame. Some guy on the forum suggested helmarparts.com for cables that might work. He put some on a 50's pu. I kept looking at their online cables and my truck and after a while I bought three that I made work. It required fabbing/grinding/drilling etc. but they work. New from brake pedal to drums.
Thanks all for your in- put, I took the part # and called Green Sales they told me it would be after market and $65.00 [a little expensive but if it works, worth it to me]. I'll find out if it fits and post an up date. again Thanks All! Rick
I understand that usually the customer gives the wrong info. I ran into a definate part number being wrong issue. The size of the cables I bought didn't match the lengths listed on line or in the catalogues. I bought 3 cables and had to send them all back. All were the same problem, Too Short. Yes, I had my vin # ran and I was told they were no longer available.
All the cables I ended up with were aftermarket. I guess that might have been the problem.
The guy I listed for people to call is the person who helped me out. I had him make the cables the same size as what I took off. They fit perfect.
I am not blasting parts people. I have met many over the years that are worth their weight in gold. Knowledgeable and willing to help.
I still need the cable from the pedal back and I am going to see George Martin and get the right one the first time. He will also take out the steel cables and replace with stainless for a buck or two.
