Turbo on 351M

Hi has anyone put a turbo charger on a 351M or 400? Did you have good results with it ? What were the good and bad about it? After it was all said and done what was the ballpark price?

Thanks for your time Rory

Well they are low compression that is a start i guess, you wouldn't want to raise the compession much if any just look for forged stock replacement pistons. Supercharging would be easier BDS makes a manifold its $1005 for just the intake, could also find a manifold and the spacers for a 351C intake but i don't know if i would want to run two sets of intake gaskets on a pressurized motor. I would start with a fresh rebuild built to take the extra power i really don't think a stock 400 or 351M would hold up to much boost if any. The 4V cleveland heads perform great in supercharged applications and i think they would do really well on a 400. If you want to go with a centerfugial (sp?) supercharger or a turbo look at doing a lot most likely all the fab work you self becauser i know of nothing made that will just bolt on other than the BDS manifold. Anything is doable witht the right know how or enough money.

Hi I have a Rayjay turbo and the setup is made by Carroll Shelby just for the 351m or 400 you use the stock manifold and the plumbing from the kit and a I believe a holley 4 barrel carb. I dont know of anybody that ever hade one or anything like it homemade or kit form.

Thanks Rory

Hi Thanks for all the input, I bought it off of E-bay. I don't think it would be too hard to make, just time and a little know how. The guy I bought it from said he bought it new back in 78. Also, he said it ran very well with a stock engine (400) but I have never seen one before or since. I called a turbo dealer and thay told me the turbo I had was capable of making 27 psi of boost but recommended only 8-10 psi on a stock engine.

Thanks Rory

Hi A few steps closer I just about have the engine rebuilt. All most ready to mount the turbo and have a new exhaust pipe made it goes from the drivers side exhaust manifold under the engine and up to the passenger side exhaust manifold. From there a new pipe bolts up to the top side of the exhaust manifold then to the turbo its self. The pipe is 3" and kind of hard to work with if its not bent right. Does anybody have any ideas on what carb to put on this engine (351M).Also the muffler I thought about the FlowMaster 40 series 3" in and out any comments?

Thanks for all the help

Rory

I think the flowmasters are a good choice to go with. As far as carbs go I prefer edelbrock and Holley. Good luck with the project keep us posted on your results...
