A few corrections/notes:
1. The small block ZF uses a concentric slave cylinder just like the Mazda tranny.
2. The only possible year that a ZF was offered in the F150 was 88, according to ZF's website, for which they only list the 4.9/5.8 engines. Every other 5 speed F150 is a Mazda transmission, if it's stock, 88-present. Many folks swap the ZF in its place.
3. All 302/5 speed trucks were the Mazda, if stock.
4. All 351's were coupled with an automatic transmission in F150's, except for some rare 1988 models.
5. Both the ZF and Mazda transmission cases are made out of aluminum.
6. 5th gear on the Mazda is something like .79 or .80; the gas ZF is .76, the diesel is .77.
Navy, it sounds like your master or slave is going bad. Try bleeding the lines.
William, I might have to try that...might be the cause of the double-clutching and engaging second issues. Fourth gear is a bear because it seems like the shifter's misaligned or loose; I sometimes have to slide it over before the gear engages.
Oh, and I have the M5OD. I found that out while crawling underneath the truck looking for anything that might have caused my fuel system to die.
sry to hyjack the thread but i have the same problem as the org poster. They (shop)keep telling my tranny is gone 2k$ to fix. I tend to think its something with the clutch i.e. pilot, through-out, or air in slave. The tranny poped out of gear a few times the other night after a 2.5 hour ride when i whould drop the hammer. BTW I have 93 f-150 5.0 mazda 5spd

I have an idea that $2,000 should buy you a new or remanufactured tranny, or at least get you close--at that rate, it's not even worth the labor fees for rebuilding your existing one. Doing the clutch would cost you even less. Seems to me that the mechanic you talked to is trying to turn a quick buck or has his head firmly entrenched in his ***.
I replaced those shifter bushings and plugs on mine. Now for anyone that has to get in there and do it I found the directions on here and they to leave it in first gear but do not and put it in neutral. I was having a hard time putting the cover back on then finally got the idea to move the synchronizers back one notch and put the lever in the middle where neutral is and it finally went back on. It wasn't too bad of a job I worked it from the top by pulling the carpet back and taking the transmission cover off. If I remember right the two bushing halves, spring washers, and plugs at the dealer was like $80 some. Shoot when I got in there there wasn't anything left of the bushings except little pieces that looked like shards of glass, prob. should've changed the fluid again but had changed it few months before and felt like the tranny will just grind it up to nothing anyways so why change it.
Has anyone overloosened the bleeder screw and have it drop in the housing? I am worried about trying to find it. I was going to just shove a magnet down there to try to get it. What is the worst case scenerio. I feel like an idiot. Oh well...not the first or the last time. Steve
