I need to get my 86 4x4 to my mechanic to fix some stuff that is over my head. The truck is low on power and smokes like you wouldn't believe. I'm worried that if I try and drive it there I might cause more problems. (It needs to go about 15 miles to the shop). I was looking to tow it on one of those tow dollies that lifts just the front wheels up. I'm told that as the rear diff is turning and in turn making the tranny turn that I could hurt the tranny seeing the truck isn't actually running. Does this make sense or is it only on newer trucks? Any help would be appreciated!!
well whenever i am towing a FR or RR vehicle on a tow dolly i just put the rear wheels up on the dolly. however i hope your not going to be goign to fast cause that thing will have a tendancy to fish tail if you go to fast. unless what your pulling it with weighs a lot.
I have a tow dolly that I use to pull my car to the drag strip. I pull the drive shaft everytime its a pain since I go once a week but for you it shouldn't be. With the shaft gone you can go about 60-65mph depending on how heavy the load is. Like Learath states too fast with a light load and it will fish tail. Make sure you are using something comparable to the load you are pulling or you might have troubles stopping or turning while you are slowing down. You don't want to jackknife. I've done it once while using a Chebby S-10 pulling a '79 Hurst/Olds. The problem with tow dollies are that there is hardly any weight put on the tongue.
