I have a 05 F350 without the factory trailer brake controller. I wish it had it when it was ordered. Can I add it now? Are the wiring harnesses there? Thanks
Yes, but you have to replace the master cylinder as well. There are a few places that sell it in a kit with everything to install it. You also have to take it to a Ford dealer and have them update the software in the PCM to get it to work.
Check with a couple of the site sponsors. I'm pretty sure one of them was selling it. I think it was around $600. You have the controller, harness, master cylinder, and them programmed by dealer to allow truck to recognize
This Is What It Takes To Install Towcommand on 2005-7 SD
I bought my TowCommand Trailer Brake Controller (TBC) kit from Power Stroke Shop (1-800-572-1422 or http://www.powerstrokeshop.com/), ask for Bob when calling. There are 2 different kits; gas (kit #5C3Z19H332AA) and diesel (kit #5C3Z19H332BA). $420 for the kit plus s/h and taxes - which includes the in-dash module, mastercylinder, smaller filler tray (for if you dont already have the factory 4 AUX Upfitter switches, to cover up the hole the bigger tray leaves), and instruction/programming sheet. Your truck already has the wiring inplace (behind the empty dash tray and under the hood), so no problem there. After I got the kit, I then took mine to a local Ford stealership (I mean dealership) and they charged me a total of $311 (which I thought was a rip-off) to install dash-module, install mastercylinder, bleed braking system (you need a special scan tool to properly cycle the valves on an ABS system to get all the air out) and they turned on a paramiter in the PCM (computer). I did try to order the kit from the local dealer first but they wanted exactly $200 more for it! I did a LOT of research on the kit pricing and the above was the cheapest I found. Obviously I should of done more research on the install pricing.
I also bought from them the 4 AUX Upfitter switch kit (around $85) too. It goes next to the TowCommand. Which goes next to the factory TBC. I installed it myself, really easy.
Dissapointed that every trailer I have hauled since the install (Tahoe boats & U-Haul) had surge and not electric brakes. So I have not needed the TBC yet. I am still glad I got it though.
Save some money and install the unit in the dash youself I had the dealer install the master cyl. and reprogram the instrument cluster and they charged me $200
That was what I had in mind too. I asked the stealership, 'how much would the install be if I were to do the dash module & mastercylinder myself?' They said, "We charge a flat rate of $290+TAX on installing the TowCommand." So I made an appointment. Then I came back, just gave them the box of hardware and let them do the whole thing. The process took 2 hours. This flat rate might not be the case with all dealerships, but it doesnt hurt to ask. At least they were honest about the price.
This is the break-down:
Brake Fluid $15.12
Service Materials $20.35
Labor $254.39
Sub-Total $289.86
Sales Tax $21.81
Total $311.67

Has anyone found out if the earlier 05 Towcommand systems can be changed to allow for full braking below 15 MPH? I like to do a pull-test before I start towing my fifth wheel and this controller will not allow it.
Ford did make a change to the module some time in 05 they now put out between 10-12 volts when using manual control you might want to try talking to your dealer and see if they will change it out for you
Ya, I know they made a change that allows it now, but a few people were looking into it so I had hoped someone would come back with a definative answer. I'll call my friend in parts at a local dealership and see what they can tell me.
Does anyone know if this kit can be installed in the 2004 models or not? Thanks!
No, it cant. But I am sure anything is possible if money were no object though. Before I bought my new SD (Super Duty), I asked the dealer about buying a used 1999-2004 (1st Generation SD) and adding the TowCommand later. The dealer said it was not possible to add the feature unless it is a 2005 or newer SD - the wiring behind the dash (for module) or under the hood (for mastercylinder) does not even exist, the PCM is not capable of such a thing (it requires a PCM that has a paremater you can turn 'on'), no in-dash place to mount it, & etc.
If I were you, I would just invest in the Prodigy TBC.
