Just bought 1994 ford turbo diesel. Has Factory Turbo. 60,000 on Fresh Engine. It does ok empty at 15-16 mpg highway, but when I hook up to my 29ft TT. I have no power. It will maintain about 60 mph. If I put it to the floor, nothing happens. It does not blow smoke or anything. The pickup is completely stock. Injection pump is leaking. Pulled it off to get rebuilt.
There are many upgrades that can be done to a stock IDI. The stock turbo outlet is restrictive at only 2.5", the downpipe is also the same size. ATS sells an upgrade kit that can convert everything to a 3", though some moddong will be needed to make the larger pipe fit (easy to do). This alone will give you a noticable difference. The rest o the exhaust should be at least 3" with a low restriction muffler, I ran a 3" strait pipe, others go to a 4" pipe or duals (or both!).
I suspect you will notice an improvement in performance after you get the pump back. Ideally there should be a slight black haze at WOT after the turbo has spooled up (lots of black indicates overfueling, while clear indicates not enough)).
If you go all out and replace all of the exhaust system with something that will reduce restriction as much as a 3" setup would, then you can start turning up the fuel as well to get even more power (depending on smoke and EGTs).
If you start to turn up the fuel, or have your IP tech do this for you, than a pyrometer is mandatory and a boost gauge is also a good idea (do not exeed 1200*F).
Your engine is capable of puting out more power than a stock 1st generation powerstroke, 250Hp should be possible (ford advertised 190).
