OK I just had my 84 f250 6.9 emissions tested and the dang thing failed!!
At 30% throttle it passed great with a 6.6% out of the 30% max,
AT wot it failed with a 33.6% out of the 30% max.
I am thinking an oil change and all filters any other ideas would be great.
I did not realize Utah was so strict. I live in NY (Western) and my lovely state (drips with sarcasm) adopted the California emissions crap. They beauty is anything older than 1995 is exempt and only costs me 10 bucks and out the door I go. Replacing emission control hardware is a truck payment by itself. Now your rig was over 8600 GVW in 1984 should have been exempt period. It definately is always a good thing to replace filters fresh oil etc. The only thing I can think of that would help emissions would be a fresh IP and injectors.
I just changed the air filter and on the short drive home it seamed like it was smoking quite a bit less, while changing the filter I remembered that the IP had been advanced, so after it cools down mabye I will put it back to where it was.
Sounds like it's over fueling at higher rpm. A clean air filter will help a lot IF the old one was getting loaded with dust/dirt. Has the pump been turned up??
The test is higher speed/rpm and lower speed/rpm. The high end is not wide open throttle nor do they do a snap throttle test......yet!! The guy testing can "make" it fail if he's using the wrong gear for the test and lugging the engine (manual trans) I don't remember what speeds are used, something like 40 mph and 25 mph.
Diesels are only im'd along the Wasatch Front. Salt Lake, Davis and Utah counties. Rest of the state is safety inspection only.
Well just a quick update, IT PASSED!!!! I am 100% convinced that the guy doing the test diddn't have a clue and was lugging the motor way to much, but even with his crappy driving the high end went from 33.6% to 29%
