C6 Modulator valve pin

I have a 72 F250 with 360/C6 combo and I have misplaced the modulator valve pin.

I was wondering if anyone knows the length of the pin. Diameter would be nice also but I can get that from the modulator valve.

No one localy has them or can get them(no referance to the correct one). I can possibly get one but need the length. Ford has a multi pack but I don't feel like paying $70 for a pack of pins and than play the quessing game to figure out which one it is.

Thank you

You can buy a new modulator for less than $20. Last one I bought from NAPA was under $15.

Go get one out a junkyard tranny. Should be pretty cheap and pretty quick also. C6s are still pretty easy to find around here.

Wanna guess why the guessing game with the selection pack?

Because the length of the rod makes a differance in internal pressure, and install the wrong pin length and it will be ----- in one word ---- WRONG!

You might get lucky and the "junk yard trans" you pull one from "might be" the right length, or even close to it, but you will never know and you might never feel the differance until it starts to slip and you need to rebuild it.

Do it right, check the pressures, and install the right length rod!

If not, find, and pay someone who can.

There are only 4 lengths.

I cut them from a metal coat hanger.

1/ 1.601-1.611
2/ 1.634-1.644
3/ 1.650-1.660
4/ 1.667-1.677

Try the longest one first.
If the shifts are to high or hard, grind it off to the next size.

Arch angle. I tried to find the pin from local tranny shops. I tried all the local one and no one had a clue. They said if I knew the length they could get one. One tranny shop said they haven't seen a C6 sence 2000 or 01. Ammco was about useless as they don't even rebuild trannies. They have a central rebuilding facility and just local munkies to swap out trannies.

Stuart thank you. I actually did a more therough internet search and think I found one of your posts from the Ford Tranny forum. I plan on making them soon.

I had untill this past weekend to finish up the truck and now that that is passed It will probably be another couple months before I get it to the point where I can drive it. I lost my nights and full weekends and have to slow down on the truck to get other things done. I hate it when I miss deadlines.

If you go to a junk yard to pull one off the only thing to remember is to get on that has the same color band that is on your modulator. The modulators have a color code for shifting pressures.

*C4AZ-7A380-A .. Modulator Rod ~ Length = 1.677" (11/16"); Diameter = 1/8"

*Available new from Ford only as a assorted package of 5 = D8AZ-7A380-A FTE member net price for the kit = $42.00

C4AZ-7A380-A = Used on all Cars 1966/79 & Trucks 1968/79 - C6 transmissions.

The rod does not come with the modulator valve.

Same C6 modulator valve: 1968/72 = C4AZ-7A377-B (Motorcraft TM-2)

YEAH!
I asked a local "tranny shop" for a specific thickness direct and forward snap ring (same part used in both, I had one each .055, .089 but needed something in the .065 to .075 range to get the clutch pack clearance right) and they did not know there was more than one thickness!

You will burn the clutch pack if the piston reaches it's maximum travel before the clutches tighten up!

And the third shop I went to said one day to get the (way to common) parts----a week ago!

It'a AMAZING what passes for professional these days.

It also sucks that the dealers no longer rebuild them, and don't keep the parts in stock!
