Coolant filter?

Forgive me if I haven't read thoroughly enough, but what exactly are the benefits of a coolant filter, and how do they effect engine longevity?

Check my gallery for pics and they will speak more than anyone could write about it. The crud it removes is unbelievable.

I've seen all that, my question is whether it is worth it. I can see that it could very likely extend the life of your water pump, but that is the only reasonable benefit I can see.

Filter kit: $119
Recommended three filters in first year: 3x$10.50
Total: $150.50

New Motorcraft waterpump from Rockauto: $152

Plus $80 an hour for labor time how many hours it takes. If you can't do it yourself. If it can screw up a water pump what else can it screw up? So why risk it. I will be putting one on mine within the next month.

Cost of new water pump: $152
Cost of labor: $80-90/hr
Knowing that you're in the middle of the Mojave Desert when the water pump gives out: Priceless

Seeing as how I'm going to be traveling through the Southern California, Arizona, and Nevada deserts over the life of my truck, I'm willing to pay the money for the coolant filter just for the peace of mind while I take my family across some of the most arid places on earth.
Think of it as simple insurance: no, it doesn't guarantee that your water pump will never go out, but heck, insurance doesn't promise to pay for your vehicle when you may have caused the accident.

We ran coolant conditioner filters on all of our heavy equipment and OTR trucks when I was a truck mechanic.
We had trucks that were over 30 years old that the radiators looked like brand new inside.

Reason why...

1) Better cooling.

2) Removes abrasive sand and sediment.

3) Reduced wear on all internally cooled parts.

4) Waterpump is not cheap or easy to replace on a 6.0L.

4) Becuase it is a mod that works and my gallery pics of what it removes are priceless.

Why do I hear about coolant filters all over the diesel forums, but I have never heard about anything like this for my Mustang or any other gasoline engine system?

Cause a gas waterpump costs about $35 reman. $150 and up in a diesel. The entire cooling system of a diesel works much harder than that of its gasser counterpart.

Dieselsite Filter

I just installed the filter kit from Dieselsite and didn't lose but a few drops of Gold. Took 20 Mins going slow. Drove Bertha around let the degass bottle drain and fill up and already the gold fluid is cleaner. She works as advertised! I second the "priceless" comments as my 2007 PSD unit has only 3000 miles, but the fluid was already hazy with crud in it. Good call boyz on the filter kit. Advice from FTE forum...priceless.

Thanks for that link and info. I'll be going that route next week. I've got a commercial account at Napa and get a really good discount and I can fab my own bracket and stuff.
