Yep...that's the risk you take with cotton filters. I've run K&N, S&B, and an AFE element on my truck. They are all exactly the same. Given enough wash cycles the cotton will shrink and little pinholes will form in the media. Holes large enough that our turbos will suck the oil right out of them.
I will never believe, or agree that this is a problem specific to K&N, because I know that it is not.
Why do think I keep coming back to the 6637?.....it's the only one that I can trust to do the job.
I run the AFE and you can white glove test the inside of my intake tube any day. I have two filters so that when I wash and change one I can put a fresh one on while the other is being serviced.
In defense of the K&N, I ran a K&N open system on my '99 for two years and could never find any evidence of dusting. The guy that I sold it to is still running that set up or at least was the last time I saw him with the truck about 3 months ago.
www.fleetfilter.com look up a 46637. get a short (3"-4") piece of 4" exhaust pipe and rmove the top of the stock air box. Use the piece of exhaust to connect the tube to the filter and lay it in the bottom of the stock air box. Or you can remove the air box and fabricate a battery tray then just let the filter lay behind the battery and zip tie the IAT sensor from the air box to the master cylinder.
