Okay last october I replaced the connecting rods and tie rods. I also replaced two carrier bearings on the driver side of the front of my f-350. Well after doing this I had the Ford stealership do an aligment on the front. The guy said that this was only the second truck like mine he had ever seen and they didn't even do the aligment on a lift but rather on the groung(truck would not fit lift). After that same time I replaced my tires. Now some eight months later I see considerable wear on my driverside tire. the wear is only on the outside and the other front tire is a little worn too, but not as bad. These are cooper 50,000 mile tires. Am'I crazy for thinking that this shouldn't be happening? What do you guys think. My friend FYI chevy guy dosen't know anything about Fords says maybe the axle isn't true or has been twiked. I think its more a probability that they did it wrong at the shop, but is there a way to prove it, or am I just screwed. Thanks
Casey there are a few varibles when it comes to tires. One have you rotated the tires? if so how often. Even if you have a perfect alignment front and rear tires wear differently so they need to be rotated front to back and back to front between 5-7,000 miles. It also possible that the alingment is off. Too much toe in or too much positive camber (top of the tire leaning outward) could cause outer edge wear. Also what pressure are you running in the tires?
Pretty much unless its only been 500 miles since the alignment your not going to get anything out of the shop. I would get the alignment checked and adjusted if needed then rotate your tires and double check your air pressure.
Well this is the first time I have rotated the tires, but I'm not putting that many miles on the truck since last october. I usually run around sixty to sixty five pounds preasure it may have been down as little as fifty five but that would be all tires. I keep them pretty equal. I think sixty five is about the max recommended for the tire. Honestly these trucks can go out of aligment that fast? I haven't been off roading in the past eight months.
Air pressure sounds good. I would bet that its not set correctly or you have worn parts up front. Jack it up and double check the ball joints and tie rod ends. They really shouldn't change unless you hit something or that parts wear. If it were a F-250 with the indendant front axle thats a different story!
Thats kinda what I thought. I thought these solid axles held up alot more than the others. I really dont think anything is too worn being that I replaced the majority of it when I had the original aligment done, but I'll take a look. You never know.
Casey, I had an issue with the outside of the tire wearing prematurely(1997 f350 dually). My truck was toed in 5/16 of an inch. I have had my new tires on a while now and wear looks good.
I bet you and Tim a right. I just dont know much about aligments. I understand the two adjustments, but I can't do any of that myself right? I have to trust the stealership to do it wrong?
yes the alignment needs to be set on an alignment machice. If you super careful toe can be set with a tape measure but it will not be as accurate as one an alingment machine.
I had the same thing happen after alignment. I took mine back to the shop and they said my toe was off. They ask if I'd been hitting holes and curbs I hadn't, but they did do it again for nothing. I had been a couple thousand miles. Maybe if you speak to someone in charge they will redo yours. Let them know you could be a great customer. My alignment shop had did mine for years. So I guess that being a loyal customer helps.
