Please please help me save some money. My 96 stroker will barely move. I was coming off the thruway and hit the light. When it turned green I could only go about 1 mph. Previous to this the thing shifted perfectly,no slippage and firm shifts. It just doesnt make sense to me. The only clue I have is that when it was cold and I put it in reverse it would stall,as if a standard would if you just dumped the clutch without any throttle. Also I got a code yesterday ,1728 indicating slippage. Well I got towed home and dropped the tranny pan. It was not good! The magnet was full of shavings and surrounded by a greasy grey material that kinda looked like never sieze. I changed the fluid and filter. The only thing that happened was i got a little harder kick when i put it in reverse but no kick when putting it in the forward gears. It still only goes about 1 mph with the engine screaming. Reverse seems a little stronger than forward. Any advice would be appreciated.
I hate to tell you but the tranny is proably toast. Metal shaving ususally mean only one thing........rebuild. BTW: stop driving/running it or you may destroy some really expensive parts, most hard parts are not included with a rebuild and will only get more and more expensive if you continue putting it in gear. BTW: Now is not the time to save money when rebuilding. A little extra $$ now will save a bunch later IMO. I guess what that means is don't go with teh cheapest, they just don't last long. My 2 cents.
Just getting home from work, had to drive the astro today. I called my friend at ford in parts and he said the trans and torque converter will be $1783, list about $2200.He said it is remanufactured but has all new parts. It comes with a 3 year 75000 mile warranty. How much is a bts, and where do I get one? Whats the difference between that and the remanned ford? Thanks for the input everyone.
It seems like that is a good price. Get the best converter you can.
That is not a bad way to go. The Ford rebuilds are not too bad and that is a really good warranty. If you have trouble anywhere in the country you will always be near a Ford store if you need a warranty repair. Get a cooler and a temp gauge and you will be very happy with it if you take care. BTS tranny and converter is about $3,500 but it will last forever while doing what a truck tranny should be able to do.
sounds like you're getting a discount from your friend. Yea the BTS is more money. He builds them bullet proof with heavier internals, more clutches and special in house mods to increase life, power, and performance.
Try $3900 for the BTS tranny/covnverter + shipping it to you and you shipping yours back to him. And then the cost of installing it (if you can't do it yourself). Definitely worth it, but I estimated around $4500 when it is all said and done. I'm going through the same thing and will most likely go with a BTS. Just gotta convince the wife... Jasper's go for around $2500 with 3yr/75000 mile warranty, but its a gamble getting a good one. A friend of mine is on his 4th in 1.5 years. (nightmare)
You get what you pay for. The bts sounds nice but I can barely come up with th $ for the ford. Cuda,I was checing out the link and it sounds great but I am lost trying to figure out what parts on there would make a complete kit. I'm gonna get ahold of an aquaintance at the trans shop that will rebuild it for me on the side. What would be a fair price just for him to rebuild it?I would bring it to him and put it in with a friend. Do you know if the combo kits make a complete trans and torque converter, or would it require additional parts? I cant figure out on the site how much all the guts are,I am very transmission illiterate.

Sorry to hear that. That's exactly how mine went. Ended up with a BTS but it was a big hit for sure. Almost $4000 by the time I was done. $1,783 is not bad for the Ford tranny considering the warranty. Is that installed? Can't help you with what to pay the guy doing it on the side. It could still be pricey if you need alot of hard parts. And will he back it up if something goes wrong.
Thats not installed at Ford but they still honor the warranty no matter who installs it. I still have to talk to the rebuilder but the Ford warranty is worth a lot to me.

Heck yeah! That's a great warranty on a reman. Shouldn't cost anymore than $200 to have it put in. You'd be on the road for under $2k and have a 3 year warranty good wherever you go. Put in a good cooler and temp gauge and it will last.
