Engine fan and Intercooler

I've noticed that my fan seems to run more than normal now that I installed my intercooler a couple months ago. Infact, the fan seems to be on most of the time. I'm wondering if it could be the intercooler preventing that much needed cool air to enter the engine compartment? My water temps ranges from 185 - 200.

How does one check to see if the fan clutch is still working properly? At idle with a cold engine the fan should be barely moving right? Hence you could take a rolled up newspaper and stop it?

I think it turns more than that. I wouldn't put my fingers in there. I don't think paper would stop it but I do know a radiator hose will stop it if it is cool. Don't ask that one either. LOL.

Farm69 since installing my IC I haven't notices the fan. I have never heard the fans in any of my PSD in the last 4 years! I would guess that your fan clutch is going out. I don't know of any good way to test them though. really hate fac clutchs to be honest. I want to hook one up like the big rigs do with either an electric clutch or air clutch!

I know on a an older diesel the fan will doesn't even really turn until it kicks on (it will actuall spin the other way sometimes). However, I'm thinking the clutch is going out on it.

TJ, you can never hear your fan? Especially pulling off the interstate and then shifting back up through the gears?

Nope never comes on. I need a better gauge in this truck but even in my 95. The most I ever pulled with it was about 6k though back mountain roads and the temp never went higher than about 5 degree's from normal.

hmm... The highest my temp has ever been was a little over 200 going down the interstate through Nebraska. I would suspect that the clutch would normally fail by not engaging instead of "sticking."

I'm sure this is a pricy unit. We replaced a fan clutch in one of our semi's last summer and it was close to 900$.

You need haevy duty heat gun, temperature probe. Fan clutch should lock up at a certain temp.(not sure for PSD). As soon as it does you can tell the diffirence.
Just start blowing large amount of hot air, listen when it locks up and see if temp. match the spec.

I didn't notice the fan running more after the intercooler install, but I have noticed mine running more when I'm running down the road, but that's just because it's hot outside (I live in AZ, currently 107 ) and mine doesn't shut off unless I'v been running a while.

It's not that expensive, I just replaced mine. I got it for $144 at O'Reilly's. The hard part is getting it off. I had to use an air chisel.

Sorry, guys I've been away from the computer for a while now. Rusty, how didn't your fan clutch act when it went out? The good thing about mine is that I believe its engaging like its supposed to. (From what exprience I have with fan clutches on tractors and stuff).
