considering 6.0 X

I am considering a 6.0 (will be my first diesel). I was wondering if there is anything I should look at when test driving it? I know to look for oil leaks, and the obvious, but are there other things to look at on a diesel?
I have heard that people open the crankcase fill cap while it is running and if it has blow by, lots of air will be coming out, but I don't know if the person I heard that from knew what he was talking about. If that is true, how do you guage the amount of air coming out, whether it is too much or not?
I know to get an Oasis report and lots of other information about these great trucks thanks to this site.
I am also leaning towards 4WD, and having never owned a 4WD vehicle, is there anything particular I should look into while test driving one? Should I just put it in 4low and make sure it makes no strange sounds and it runs good?
I am located in northeast Houston, so does anyone have any recommendations on a Ford dealership with good diesel techs nearby? I know there a lots of Texas folks on here.

thanks in advance, everyone.

If you have been reading on here, you can probably guess what most of the responses will be, like check the OASIS. Biggest thing I could suggest is stay with late model '04 or better yet 2005 model to avoid some of the pitfalls of the early 6.0 production runs, which you've probably already read. I'd also avoid one that you think (or can confirm) has had a tuner used, unless you know the specifics and are sure it was not abused.

Don't normally believe in buying new, used is better value, but when I was shopping during "Family Pricing" time I could not find a used 2005 yet, so bought new. Loved it ever since, had one injector go bad which left me stuck, other than that flawless 34k miles and counting. Great vehicles for towing and family road trips, little hard to park at the grocery of course. Good Luck.

Hi Ron,

It's good to ask questions! You'll find lots of guys with good info to share on the site.

If you're new to 4WD, by all means take it out for a drive and check it out...both 4Hi and 4Lo. The first think you'll notice is that the steering radius has changed...that's normal. When you go to turn, start with gentle turns...a sharp turn is going to produce some noise and vibration that you'll get used to. It shouldn't grind or clunk (except in these hard turns).

The other advice is not to take it 4 wheeling on dry pavement...get out in the mud and soft stuff where you'd normally use the 4 wheel.
