Oil viscosity

Hello all;
I was just wondering what viscosity people are running in their EFI 460's? Also, I am interested in their reasoning behind their choices. I am looking at moving my 88k mileage truck to a full synthetic with longer service intervals, and wanted to get some opinions on weight.

I don't think that it matters whether the engine is EFI or carborated when discussing engine oil. Whatever viscosity you use, even with synthetics, I would not go beyond 5,000 miles or six months, which comes first.

Remember that it's the oil that is lubricating those close tolerance bearings and that the longer you run an oil, dyno or synth., the more contaminants that you will get into the oil.

As for viscosity, what are you doing with the truck? Dayly driver, 10-30, working pulling weight, 15-40. Obviously, cold climates require a drop in viscosity during the winter.

The main purpose of the truck is to pull a heavy fifth wheel. 10k with mountains. It sees mileage only as a secondary vehicle otherwise. The weight is not the difficult part of the pull, The wind that is cut is the tough part. When pulling the mother gets ran very hard for long periods of time.

I use Valvoline 10W30(usually) or 5W30(depends which one I find) synthetics in my 94 F250 460. I tow an 8,000# trailer about 1/4 to 1/3 of the miles. I tow in freezing and over 105+ temps with lots of long steep hills.

I bought the truck used with 36,000 miles on it. I now have about 92,000 on it. I change every 5,000.

I am not a big fan of extended drain intervals for psychological reasons, just don't like that strange muddy rainbow color oil that comes out if you go 15K. Also most exteneded drain intervals recommend changing the filter at the usual interval. In my mind if I have to change the filter anyway, I might as well change the oil too since the work and mess is almost the same.

Look at your manual. You will find that severe duty fits a lot more of us than you would think. "normal" duty is usually pretty simple, long trips at freeway speed. Severe duty is stop and go, short trips, hot weather, dust, towing etc. A lot of us should be changing on the severe duty interval.

So far so good.
