How critical is the engine oil viscosity related to fuel injector failures? I am reviewing UOA's for several engines and most are flagged for "low viscosity" THe baseline oil is 13.71 at 100'C. Most samples are coming back at a high of 12.17 to a low of 10.86. The average viscosity is in the range of 11.6.
Could this lower than recommended engine oil viscosity shorten the life of the injectors? The engine oil used is Exxon XD-3 15w40.
Oil viscosity will drop as you put miles on the oil so what you are seeing is normal. Changing the oil on a normal service schedule should work out well. Most of us seem to do 5K mile oil changes.
Injectors are sensitive to low fuel oil pressure. Changing fuel filters regularly is probably the single most important way to extend injector life. The frequency of filter change is dependent on the quality of the fuel that you use. I find that ac10K to 15K mile fuel filter change is a good place to start.
Thanks for the info. I realize the oil will thin due to shear over time. The oil is changed on these units at 3k miles......the service requires extensive idling, amounting, in some cases, to as much as 50% engine idling.
We supply the fuel and it checks out fine. As a matter of fact, we use the same fuel in well over 1k vehicles. F/filters are changed at 3k as well. Trying to find the cause of injector failures. I'm thinking due to the lower viscosity, maybe the injectors are stumbling and are being replaced as bad when it may just involve a oil pressure activation problem??
if you do 50 percent idling, then a 3k oil change can end up being a 10k oil change. every hour of run time is 33 miles, which can wreck havoc on the injectors if the oil gets depleted.
do you have the latest reprogramming? the latest flash for the injectors is very good. also make sure the oil is cj4 rated or ci4 rating atleast. rotella is probablly the best oil and the most popular for the powerstrokes so you may even need to change brands.
