Can I pull/tow this? (pic inside)

Well, last weekend I went to an RV show and purchased a new travel trailer. I decided on a 26' Forest River Wildwood slide out. This past Saturday, I picked the unit up from the dealer.

I gotta be honest, I didn't realize how big (long) this sucker was! It was parked side-by-side to the other trailers, so I never did get a good profile look at it!

And to answer my own question: The Excursion pulls it very easily, and smooth as silk too.

On the way home, while going over a relatively small pass (1,300 feet) in 86 degree heat, EGT's were fine, but my tranny temps did get pretty high, so it looks like I won't be able to put off the 6.0L tranny cooler upgrade any longer.

Here is a link to a pic of my TT. http://good-times.webshots.com/photo/2135139820100803432PbDJUm Its 31ft tonque to bumper. It is a lite weight, 4600lbs empty-6000max. Just returned from a round trip S. Fl to Las Vegas and back, about 5000mi. including some pretty good grades in Northern Ariz. I only have the OEM tranny guage, which some say is not too reliable, but it never indicated a significant temp rise. I have a stock cooler. Outside temps were 80s and 90s F.

Yeah, I know there are a lot of Ex owners who tow quite a bit more than I, but I had to share our new purchase because we're still pretty jazzed about getting it. We've wanted a TT for quite some time, but could never afford it.

The title of my post is a rhetorical question, who's humor I was hoping would be apparent after seeing the picture and reading my post. I hope it came out that way.

I wanted to share my new acquisition with you guys, and hoped other would post up pics of their trailers too.

We also have a Sundowner 4-horse bumper-pull that gets hitched to the Ex.

I was kind of surprised the tranny cooler didn't keep the temps down. I know the 6.0L is an upgrade, but I didn't think my TT would tax my OEM cooler that much.

The hottest it got going over the pass was 195. Once over the pass and back on a "normal" flat/level roadway, the temps dropped down to 170ish.

PS - Got any pics???

S_Harvey - I got'cha bro. I wasn't taking it any other way. I wasn't trying to do the "Mines bigger than yours" thing, I was empathizing.
I went from a 24 ft TT to a 32 ft TT... it didn't really occur to me how long the combo was until our first trip.

Back on topic...
My TT weighs in close to 9K and although I don't have my tranny temp guage installed yet - I did shoot external temps using a IR Temp sensor. The pan showed up at 121*F and the stock cooler was a chilly 84*F.
Since you are seeing hi temps, my first question would be - when was the fluid last changed? The stock cooling system is pretty good (not saying it's the best, but adaquet), so I'm wondering if the fluid is loosing it's ability to shed heat. You may want to change the fluid and see what happens - maybe even replacing it with synthetic.

Ah, BTDT eh? I thought you were referring to the towing capacity.

I can't believe I'm about to post this but, I actually wanted a TT that wasn't big. LOL!

Yeah, when I bought the 6.0L tranny cooler 6 months ago, I had planned to do just that. I just kept putting it off.

Aint no putting it off anymore!

Posible your ex. has something wrong. I have an ex. wish I used to pull a 30 ft. tt. 8200 lbs. plus fully loaded ex. 8300 lbs. a total of 16500 lbs and had absolutely no overheating problems on tranny nor engine. driving on a hot day 90 degree air cond. on 6 grade up hill. Ex has everithing stock no mods. hope this helps.

Those of you who say you've never had high trans temps... How are you measuring the temperature? My 2000 X did not have a temp guage and after installing one I found my temps would get up in the 220 range at max. I added a secondary cooler in front of the radiator and dropped the max temps by 30 degrees. Do your trucks have trans temp guages?

Good point.

I have a sensor mounted on the side of the trans case, wired to my DiPricol gauge.

Highest temp the tranny hit was 195. My EGT's never went above 1,200 degrees and only reached 1,200 degrees once.

I pull a aljo 333t it is 35'6'' tounge to bumper with a 4x8 trailer on the back of it with a 03 EB 4x4 6.0td X and it pulls great trans temp run around 180 most of the time. I pull all over texas in the summer. had this same set up with a 1994 6.5td suburban and it would not pull it over 55mph without getting to hot. the travel trailer weights about 9000# loaded You just gotta Love the X.

Yes I would expect unmodified B's to flex the same or more as the F's have a little higher rate I believe. Need to research the rate chart to confirm that. Most if not all who have used B codes have modified them with one or more extra leaves from the original EX spring pack which effectively increases their rate. My unmodified F's seem to work fine as is, however over time they may sag more than desired. Since these are new springs I'll wait awhile and see. I got 1in. of rear lift from them and thats the most I wanted.
