need help with brakes

Hello everyone, I have a 1977 f-100, and after a near death experience with it(well maybe not near death, but I nearly pissed myself, lol) I am more concerned with safety than performance for the time being. So I was wondering what my options for improving braking would be? I have absolutely no knowlege of brakes, but am very willing to learn. I don't even recall what kind of brakes are on the truck, as many times as I have been underneath it. Seems like the '79 has discs up front and drums in back, but I want to say I have drums all around on the '77. Any information would be greatly appreciate as always! Sorry for my ignorance on the matter by the way.

There are options to modify and improve but if you are unfamiliar with brake systems it probably would not be the thing to do. Take your truck to a professional mechanic and have the brakes checked out. The stock brakes will work well if maintained properly.

Torque1st is right about taking it to a mechanic if you don't have any experience with brakes.

If your truck has front drums, than I would suggest converting it to a disc brake setup for your front end. You can keep the drums for the rear.

The stock brakes can be improved upon with some of the newer friction materials. I don't know what might be available tho. I use Performance Friction Carbon Metallic brakes pads on everything that needs a little help.

All F100/350's with 2WD have standard disc brakes beginning with model year 1973.

All F100/350 4X4's have standard disc brakes beginning with model year 1976.

Ah, sweetness, well thanks guys. I'm sure I'll have more questions later on. So if I were to have later model disc brakes from say, a heavy duty truck or something put on, that would be good, yes? I have several mechanics in the family, with experience in everything, so if I can I'll just have them put the stuff on.

There is also an FTE Brakes/Steering/suspension forum.

Brake discussion falls into that forum/category.
