Ok I have the step by step process downloaded by Auto Zone and it's pretty good. I do have two questions..are the stock 89 bearings pressed on or not? When do you replace the grease seal before you slide the axel back in or after the bearing goes in? Wondering how it would seal if they were installed first the axel..
I just did this to my bronco last week, the bearing does not have to be pressed in just have something that is solid and close to the same diameter as the bearing and use a hammer and hit it in. It will go in pretty easily, just be careful and make sure the bearing goes in even all the way around. There is a small lip in the housing that the bearing will seat up against. The seal will have to go in before you put your axle in. It will go in the same way the bearing did just make sure you put it in so the front of the seal is flush with housing.
ok that sounds reasonable, but I'm surprised that the seal is so large that the axel and bearing would be able to slide in and the seal still work...oh well thanks and I guess I'll wait to see after I take it all apart. Thanks Semperfi, arugh!
I don't know about your 89 but on my 90 the bearing and race were attached, they didn't come apart. I did have to use a slide hammer with a puller to remove and the seal came out with the bearing. The install was just what I wrote above. It was real simple. I am proud to say I just finished the whole thing yesterday, a complete rebuild of the rear end. Finished setting the backlash and pinion depth and was able to drive it under its own power for the first time in months. It was so great to run it again.

No No No, I just did a lot more to my Bronco then you are doing. I just replaced my bearings as well as everything else. The backlash and all is for the ring and pinion gears. Unless you took all this out or replaced them you have no need to worry about them. I was just rambling about what all I had to do.
Phew thank goodness, reason being this is my youngest boys truck and he needs to do this...I'm getting where I don't enjoy getting underneath and getting greasy. I have my own truck to work on Thanks for the help!
