windshield wiper malfunction

I'm having a problem with my wipers. At a low setting I'm getting random swipes with no rythm whatsoever. This is a real pain driving in a light rain when you don't need the wipers "wide open". I'm getting swipes every 10 seconds, then 8, then 30, and so on.

Anyone have any thoughts?

I would suspect the control switch that selects the delay time.
