The wipers in my Ranger seem to have a mind of their own...they come on at odd intervals, sometimes swiping the windshield only once...sometimes swiping it several times. I cleaned out the multi-position switch in the stalk, (as learned from other posts!) and it seemed to do the trick for about two days...then it was back to its old tricks, swiping at odd intervals. Yesterday I drove around town for a couple of hours, and the wipers were fine...didn't come on once! Any ideas? I will try to clean the contacts one more time, but I hope to avoid buying a new multi position switch. Otherwise...LOVE THE RANGER!
Mine do the same thing, but mostly when I have turned on my turn signal. I believe there is a technical bulletin out on the problem or there is a recall. I think you can find them somewhere on this site... To be honest, I haven't gotten mine fixed because it cracks me up when they just start up - swipe, swipe and that's it!!
I spoke to my service writer about this a while ago and he told me it is a known issue and the there is a switch or a part behind the dash (mucho labor) that can be replaced to fix all this, but it was never a recall piece. Go to your local service shop and talk to the service writer that has been there a while if he/she doesn't recall an issue also talk to the most experience tech there as well.
they should be able to give a direction to go
This is not a new problem,my 95 does the same thing. I have'nt fixed it because it only does it once in a while.I've heard about spraying WD-40 in the switch.
Every ranger I've driven from 93 on have had that problem: my 93, 96, 99 and at least one rental. I had the wiper motor replaced in all cases (under warranty). In at least one case (and I think more than one) it happened again and had to be replaced again. I THINK they've finally figured it out though because shortly after I got my 99 it did that and I got the motor changed and haven't had a problem since.
I tried the WD40...so far so good. I am looking into the warranty/Service bulletin issues to see if I can maybe get them to fix it for good! Thanks for the info all!!! I'll let you know what happens.
In delay mode, a few times the farther i turned the switch the slower they went. The first click (supposed to be the slowest) was swiping as fast as in highspeed. And then i clicked a few more times and it all went back to normal. Where exactly are you aprsying the WD-40?
I popped off the end cap of the "stalk," & unscrewed the phillips screw, pulled out the spring and plastic goodie with the contacts on it...then sprayed the heck out of the exposed end of the stock. (Last week I pulled this apart & cleaned it with contact cleaner solvent & re-greased it all...worked great for about two days) I carefully dabbed up the excess WD with a Kleenex & threw it back together. I didn't bother to regrease it...I'm going to give it a couple of days to see how it acts!
I have had the same thing on all of my Fords in the past 12 years or so....has not happened on my 2004 Edge but I am sure it will after I have had it a while...
The "stalk" is the turn signal lever...just happens to have the wiper controls built right into the end of it! I believe it is also known as the "multi-position" switch.
New user here. My 99 F-150 has just started doing the same thing but in order to make it stop I have to turn the wipers on and back off. I'm going to try and clean the stalk and see if that fixes it.
