Does anyone know where the stock A/C compressor mounted on a '76 with power steering and smog controls? Was it even available? I am going to put together an on-board air system with a York compressor and it looks like there is no room for the thing. I can remove my smog pump, but if I don't have to I don't want to.
A/C was not available until 1978 in the Bronco so there is no factory location. Mine doesn't have smog stuff so I don't know where the pump mounts but you may be able to find the brackets from another vehicle that may work. If you are not concerned with originality and want to upgrade some, early 80's vans had those compressors on 302's along with the very desirable Saginaw power steering pump. This pump is a lot stronger in case you are running bigger tires. Even the hoses from the van will work with a little tweaking.
Otherwise some of these aftermarket A/C companies may have the brackets you need without buying the whole system.
I have a '76 with power steering, air conditioning, and a smog pump. AC compressor is on the passenger side above the alternator. The smog pump is on the driver side above the power steering pump. It makes for a full Engine compartment but everything fits. There are three belts. One goes around the crank, water pump, and alternator. One goes around the crank, water pump, and power steering pump. One goes around the crank, AC compressor, and smog pump. The crank pulley is 3 groove, the water pump pulley is 2 groove. The alternator, power steering pump, smog pump, and AC compressor all use 1 groove. Hope this helps.
